أبان عن فضل وعلياء

أبان عن فضل وعلياء

My lord, O sheikh of the lodge, who

has given proof of merit and eminence,

إليك أشكو جور صوفية

إليك أشكو جور صوفية

باتوا ضيوفي وأودائي

باتوا ضيوفي وأودائي

To you I complain of some Sufis' injustice,

who spent the night as my guests and dear friends.

أتيتهم بالزاد مستأثراً

أتيتهم بالزاد مستأثراً

وبت تشكو الجوع أحشائي

وبت تشكو الجوع أحشائي

I brought them the provisions I had reserved for myself,

and spent the night with my entrails complaining of hunger.

مشوا على الخبز ومن عادة

مشوا على الخبز ومن عادة

الزهاد أن يمشوا على الماء

الزهاد أن يمشوا على الماء

They walked upon the bread, yet it is the custom

of ascetics to walk upon water.

وهم إلى الآن ضيوفي فجد

وهم إلى الآن ضيوفي فجد

لهم بخبز وبحلواء

لهم بخبز وبحلواء

And they are still my guests, so be generous

to them with bread and sweetmeats.

أولا فخذهم واكفنيهم فما

أولا فخذهم واكفنيهم فما

يحسن في مثلهم رائي

يحسن في مثلهم رائي

Or else take them and rid me of them, for

I have no good opinion of their kind.
