بَنُوsons of شَرَفSharaf شَرَفٌSharaf أمُّهُمtheir mother
بَنُو شَرَف شَرَفٌ أمُّهُم
وَلَيسَتand she is not أبَاكُمyour father فَلاso do not تَكذِبِlie
وَلَيسَت أبَاكُم فَلا تَكذِبِ
The Banū Sharaf—Sharaf is their mother;
The sons of Sharaf—Sharaf is their mother,
she is not your father, so do not lie.
and she is not your father, so do not lie.
وَلَكِنَّهَأand yet she التَقَطَتpicked up شَيخَكُمyour patriarch
وَلَكِنَّهَأ التَقَطَت شَيخَكُم
فَأثبِتَso he was installed فِيin ذَلِكَthat المَنصِبِposition
فَأثبِتَ فِي ذَلِكَ المَنصِبِ
But she picked up your patriarch
But she picked up your patriarch,
and installed him in that office.
so he was installed in that position.
أبِينُواmake known لَنَاto us أُمَّكُمyour mother أَوَّلاًfirst
أبِينُوا لَنَا أُمَّكُم أَوَّلاً
وَنَحنُand we نُسَامِحُكُمwe are lenient with you بِالأَبregarding the father
وَنَحنُ نُسَامِحُكُم بِالأَب
First, tell us plainly who your mother is,
Make your mother known to us first,
and we shall concede you the father.
and we will be lenient with you about the father.
