أَلاis there not ساعَةٌan hour يَمْحوerases بِهاthrough it الدَّهْرُTime ذَنْبِهُits sin
أَلا ساعَةٌ يَمْحو بِها الدَّهْرُ ذَنْبِهُ
فَقَدْfor indeed طالَhas lasted long ماthat أَشْكُوI complain وَماand that أَتَبَرَّمُI fret
فَقَدْ طالَ ما أَشْكُو وَما أَتَبَرَّمُ
Is there no hour in which Time might erase its sin?
Oh hour, that would erase all wrong with it
For long have I complained and fretted.
My lament has gone on too long, my sighs mount ceaselessly
فَلَمْfor not أَرَI see مِثْليanyone like me بَيْنَbetween عَيْنَيْهِhis two eyes جَنَّةٌParadise
فَلَمْ أَرَ مِثْلي بَيْنَ عَيْنَيْهِ جَنَّةٌ
وَبَيْنَand between حَشاهُhis heart والتَّراقيand the collarbones جَهَنَّمُHell
وَبَيْنَ حَشاهُ والتَّراقي جَهَنَّمُ
For I have seen no one like me: Paradise before his eyes,
Yet I have never seen one like me with paradise in his eyes
And Hell between his heart and collarbones.
And hellfire in his thoughts, a precarious contrast
