When the sun of day rises, it is

a sign of my greeting to you; return the greeting.

Peace from the Most Merciful at every hour,

and comfort, sweet fragrance, bounty, and blessings,

upon companions, brothers, children, and those whom

they called with kindness, who gave generously and bestowed favors,

and everyone who follows the unadulterated Sunnah

and never strays from it—he rightly deserves precedence.

    ولوْلاهُمُ ما كان في الأرضِ مُسْلِمُ

    Those are the Prophet's followers and his company;

without them, no Muslim would remain on earth.

    ولكنْ رَوَاسِيها وأوْتادُها هُمُ

    Without them, it would almost sway with its inhabitants;

but they are its firm mountains and its stakes.

    وَلكنْ هُمُ فِيها بُدُورٌ وَأنْجُمُ

    Without them, it would be darkness for its inhabitants;

but within it they are full moons and stars.

Those are my companions: a hearty welcome to them!

A hearty welcome to the good ones, and greet them gladly!

    يُبَلغُه الأدنَى إليهِ وَينعَمُ

    Each one of them has a greeting especially his;

let whoever is nearest convey it and graciously oblige.

O kind one, convey my greeting and tell them:

'Your loving friend prays for you and sends his greetings.'

O you who blame me for loving them and befriending them,

consider—may God guide you—who deserves more blame.

By what evidence, or by what argument,

do you deem loving them my disgrace and resent it?

    وَحُبُّ عِدَاهُم ذاكَ عارٌ ومَأثمُ

    Disgrace lies only in hating them and avoiding them;

loving their enemies—that is disgrace and sin.

Indeed, by Him who opened hearts and deposited the

love within them, where it never breaks off,

and burdened the lover's heart with it, although it

is too weak to bear a shirt and feels pain,

and subdued them until they yielded to the assault of

love, neither turning aside nor faltering,

and through it humbled souls, short of whose abasement

lie death's pools, with deaths hovering overhead:

whether your dwellings are near or far, you are indeed

our beloved ones, whether absent or present.

Ask the wind's breezes how much they have carried

of a passionate lover's love, whose longing cannot be concealed.

The proof of this is that, as they blow,

they almost divulge his passion, if only they could speak.

Whenever longing and love's anguish grew fierce within me,

and the bonds of graceful patience almost snapped,

I would console myself with meeting and its nearness,

and delude my soul, though it remained apprehensive.

    فلِي بحِمَاها مَرْبَعٌ ومُخَيَّمُ

    I would direct my gaze toward the place where you are;

within its sanctuary I have a spring dwelling and a camp.

And I recall a verse spoken by someone long departed,

whose patience had deserted him, leaving him love-stricken:

'I ask every morning traveler and evening traveler about you,

and gesture toward your homelands and send greetings.'

How long can a yearning lover endure separation from his beloved,

while the fire of sorrow blazes in his heart?

Indeed, by Him whose House the lovers made pilgrimage to,

answering His call at the place of consecration and entering ihram,

having uncovered their heads in humility

before the might of Him to whom faces bow and submit:

across the desert they cry, 'At Your service, our Lord!

Yours is sovereignty and the praise that You know.'

    فلمَّا دَعَوهُ كان أقربَ منهمُ

    He called them, and they answered willingly and lovingly;

when they called upon Him, He was nearer to them.

You see them upon weary mounts, their heads disheveled,

and dust-covered, yet happier and more at ease therein.

    ولم يُثنِهِمْ لذَّاتُهُمْ والتَّنَعُّمُ

    They left their homelands and families out of longing;

their pleasures and comfortable living did not turn them back.

They journey from its far regions and mountain passes,

on foot and mounted, having submitted to God.

When their eyes beheld His House, toward which

the hearts of humankind blaze with longing,

it was as though they had never toiled before,

for their hardship had departed from them.

By God, how many tears were poured out,

with another following in their wake, never preceding!

    فينظرُ مِن بينِ الدُّموعِ ويُسْجِمُ

    The lover's eye is flooded with its tears;

he looks through them and pours them forth.

When the eye beholds it, its darkness disappears,

and pain departs from the sorrowful heart.

The beholding eye does not fully know its beauty

until the gaze returns, with longing still greater.

No wonder: when He attributed it

to Himself, the Most Merciful made it revered.

He clothed it in the greatest robe of majesty,

    bearing embroidery marked with beauty.

For this reason every heart loves it,

bows before it reverently, and honors it.

They proceeded to the standing at Arafat, hoping for mercy

and forgiveness from Him who gives generously and honors.

By God, that greatest gathering is

like the gathering on Presentation Day—though that is greater.

There the Almighty draws near—exalted is His majesty—

and boasts of them to His angels; He is most generous.

    وَإنِّي بهمْ بَرٌّ أجُودُ وأرْحَمُ

    He says, 'My servants have come to Me out of love;

I am kind to them, generous and merciful.

I call you to witness that I have forgiven their sins,

granted them what they hoped for, and bestow blessings.'

Glad tidings to you, people of this gathering, where

God forgives sins and shows mercy!

How many freed ones there have had their freedom completed,

while another must work toward freedom; your Lord is most merciful.

Never among humankind has Satan been seen more enraged

or more abased than there, vile as he is.

    فأقبلَ يَحْثُو التُّرْبَ غَيْظا وَيَلطِمُ

    That is because of something he saw that enraged him;

he began throwing dust in fury and striking himself,

and because his eyes witnessed mercy arriving

and forgiveness being apportioned from the Lord of the Throne.

He built what he built, until he thought

he had secured his structure and made it firm.

God struck his building at its foundation,

and it fell upon him, collapsing into ruin.

How high, how far, can a building rise

when he builds it and the Lord of the Throne demolishes?

They went to Jam‘ and spent the night at the

Sacred Landmark, prayed at dawn, then advanced

toward the Great Jamrah, intending to stone it

at the time of the Eid prayer; then they headed toward

their lodgings to sacrifice, seeking His bounty

and reviving a revered rite inherited from their father.

    Had sacrificing themselves pleased God,

they would willingly have obeyed and submitted to the command,

just as, in striving, they offered their throats

to His enemies until their blood flowed.

    وذلِكَ ذلٌّ للعبيدِ ومَيْسَمُ

    But they obeyed by lowering their heads;

that is humility for servants, and their identifying mark.

When they had completed the ritual cleansing

required of them, fulfilled their vows, and finished,

He called them to visit the Ancient House:

welcome to the visitors—how greatly honored!

By God, how splendid their visit to it,

when those rewards had been secured and were being apportioned!

God has abundant favors there, and blessing,

    kindness, beneficence, generosity, and mercy.

They returned to those lodgings in Mina,

attained their wishes there, and enjoyed their blessings.

    وأذِّنَ فِيهمْ بالرحيلِ وأعْلِمُوا

    They stayed there a day, another day, and a third;

departure was proclaimed among them, and they were informed.

    شعارُهُمُ التكْبيرُ واللهُ معْهُمُ

    They went to stone the Jamrahs in the afternoon;

their watchword was magnifying God, and God was with them.

If only your eyes had seen them standing there,

    their palms outstretched, seeking mercy,

calling to Him, 'O Lord, O Lord, we are

Your servants; we invoke none but You, as You know.

    فأنتَ الذي تُعْطِي الجزيلَ وتُنْعِمُ

    Here we are, hoping from You for what befits You;

You are the One who gives abundantly and bestows blessings.'

When they had fulfilled every need in Mina,

and those broad valleys flowed with them, they proceeded

toward the Kaaba, the Sacred House, in the evening,

circled it seven times, prayed, and offered greetings.

    The pains of farewell

When farewell drew near and they became certain

that the cord of closeness was being severed,

and only a farewell pause remained,

by God, what eyelids there poured forth tears!

And, by God, what livers there had been filled with

passion, so that fire blazed within them!

And, by God, what breaths, whose heat almost

    melts the bewildered, love-enslaved lover!

You saw only someone stunned and bewildered,

or another revealing his sorrow in song:

    'I have departed, but my longings for you remain;

the fire of sorrow within me flares and blazes.

    I bid you farewell, but longing turns back my reins;

my heart has remained encamped within your sanctuary.'

There, no one should ever be reproached

if what he had concealed becomes apparent.

O drivers of pale camels, by God, your Lord,

stop for me at those dwellings and offer greetings.

Say, 'A lover whom longing led toward you

has met his death for you; may you live and be safe.'

God, Lord of the Throne, decreed among His decrees

that passion blinds hearts and makes them mute.

Your love is the root of passion, and its orbit

revolves around it: triumph and gain for the lover.

The passionate lover's bones perish after his death,

but his yearnings remain an inviolable endowment upon him.

O heart whose reins passion has taken

into its possession, how long this lingering?

How long will you remain unawakened, when the end approaches,

and departure's cups are brought near while people sleep?

Yes, you will awaken when the covering is removed,

and what you conceal becomes apparent to you.

O you who kindle a fire whose light benefits others,

while the heat of its blaze burns between your ribs:

is this the fruit of the knowledge you planted?

Is this what you hoped it would yield for food?

Is this the share you have accepted

for yourself in both abodes: status and a dirham?

Is this the profit you have earned?

By your life, there is no profit, nor is the capital safe.

You withheld something whose giving would not harm you,

and surrendered something whose like is beyond valuation.

You miserly withheld this paltry share out of baseness,

and surrendered the eternal abode, if only you understood.

You sold bliss that has neither end nor

equal for a paltry price that will soon vanish.

Why not reverse the bargain, if you are prudent?

But you have squandered prudence, if only you knew.

    You labor to demolish what you build with your hand;

throughout your days you build and demolish.

    When God's purpose calls, you become inert as a dead man;

when your soul's purpose calls, you lay warp and weave weft.

When violating the command, you plead divine decree,

making it an ally against the Most Merciful, claiming compulsion.

You absolve your own soul of its evil deeds,

blame God's decrees, and act unjustly.

You loosen matters whose knots the Law has firmly bound,

and seek to bind what the Law has loosened.

You understand from the Messenger's words the opposite of what

he intended, for your heart is uncomprehending.

Obedient to the summons of error, rebellious toward its guidance,

one day it is returned to its Lord and learns.

Neglecting God's command, he has deceived himself,

degrading his soul; how could he be loved and honored?

Slow toward obedience, faster toward obscenity

than a torrent running undivided in its channel.

    Yet despite this you claim to possess knowledge;

you have certainly lied in what you claim.

You are nothing but ignorant, then unjust,

    and foremost among the ignorant.

If this is a servant's counsel to himself,

who could learn guidance from him?

Of such a condition someone of old spoke,

    فإنْ كنْتَ لا تدرِي فتلكَ مُصيبةٌ

    and the speaker spoke well:

    'If you do not know, that is a calamity;

if you do know, the calamity is greater.'

If you could see the world behind its veils,

you would see a phantom in a dream soon interrupted.

Like dreaming of a phantom visiting in sleep; then the

dream ends, the phantom departs, and the lover remains enthralled.

Or a shadow reached by the sun at its rising,

which shrinks at noon and is cut away.

Or a summer raincloud whose midday shelter was pleasant,

which swiftly departs while scorching heat blazes.

Or a guest's meal, pleasant to swallow,

whose condition becomes known shortly afterward.

    Such is this world, like a sleeper's dreams;

after it the everlasting abode will come.

Cross it as a passage, not a dwelling; be within it

a stranger, and live praiseworthily and safely.

Or a wayfarer who rested at midday beneath a spreading tree,

then departed, leaving its shade to disperse.

A traveler whose resting place never becomes settled

until he sees his homelands and offers greetings.

How astonishing! Through how many deaths has it admonished

its children, yet they remain blind to its fatal blows!

It gave them cups of love until they grew intoxicated,

then gave them cups of poison while the people slept.

Strangest in man is his seeing these

terrible things while, immersed in them, remaining love-enslaved.

That is only because the wine of loving it

surely robs a man of reason and severs it.

Stranger still is that its lovers are those whom

it humiliates, while tending and honoring its enemies.

That is proof that its worth is

a mosquito's wing, or smaller and baser.

Enough for you is what the Messenger said by comparison

of it and the eternal abode; the truth is understood:

as a person lowers a finger into the sea

and withdraws it—what does he gain from that?

Ah, would that I knew: shall I ever spend a night

wary of it, with my resolve made firm?

Shall I reach life's water and quench my thirst

from its basin, filled to overflowing?

Will its landmarks appear after there have swept

across its dwelling those sand-bearing winds, and be recognized?

Shall I lay my cheek upon the dust of their thresholds,

submissively, so that they may soften and show mercy?

Shall I cast myself prostrate at their door,

while the birds of love's deaths circle above me?

Alas for me! Life wastes away and ends,

yet this reproach remains while you remain alive.

    There is no doing without you, no independence from you;

I have no patience that could let me forget you.

Let anyone other than you be angry; there is no harm

if you have been pleased with your servant.

The outcome of my endurance in loving you is praiseworthy,

but endurance away from you is punishment and sin.

    I do not complain of what pleases you;

rather, I accept it and submit.

    Enough for me is belonging to you, even from afar;

indeed, it is a great and exalted portion.

When it is said, 'This is their servant and their lover,'

his face beams with joy and smiles.

Here he has shown his humble entreaty, asking

you through his condition and his speech, making known

to his beloved ones his plea for tenderness, for he is

truly thirsting, and you are the sweet watering place.

O heedless one, submerged in ignorance and passion,

felled by wishes, soon you will regret it.

Awaken! The time draws near after which there is

only a garden or the heat of blazing fire.

    Hold firmly to the radiant Sunnah;

it is the firmest handhold, which never breaks.

    Cling to it as a miser clings to his wealth;

bite upon it with your molars, and be safe.

    Leave aside what people have introduced after it;

the pasture of those innovations is most pestilent.

Prepare an answer for when you hear the call

from God on Presentation Day: 'What answer did you give

My messengers when they came to you?' Whoever has

answered others will be disgraced and regret it.

Take the greatest shield from reverence for the Most Merciful

for a day when Hell appears plainly.

That bridge will be erected above its surface:

one falls, another is scratched, another escapes unharmed.

    The God of all worlds comes to fulfill His promise;

He settles what lies between His servants and judges.

    Your Lord obtains the wronged person's right;

woe to a servant who wrongs His creatures!

The ledger of reckoning is opened, and the

scales are set with justice that does no wrong.

No criminal fears an atom's weight of injustice,

nor is a doer of good deprived of his reward.

    The wrongdoer's limbs testify to what he committed;

thus the Guardian seals his mouth.

Would that I knew your condition when

the records of all people fly about and are distributed!

Will you take your record in your right hand, or will it

be delivered into the other behind your back?

    You read in it everything you have done;

your face then shines, or it grows dark.

You say, 'My record—read it! For it

announces the great triumph and makes it known.'

But if the other fate is yours, you will say,

'Ah, would that I had not received it!'—burdened with loss.

Hasten, then, while there is still room in your lifetime,

and your ransom is accepted and your payment has value.

    Strive, hurry, and seize the time of youth;

while opportunity remains, labor and gain.

    Travel swiftly, for the march behind you is swift;

far from escape—there is no fleeing or evading it.

These are deaths: whatever valley you descend into,

you must come to them, or they will come to you.

That is only jealous protection, lest it be attained

by anyone unworthy of it; the Lord knows His creatures best.

Though it is veiled from us by every hardship,

and surrounded by what hurts and pains souls,

by God, what joy its interior contains,

and varieties of delights for us to enjoy!

And, by God, the cool ease of life among its tents

and gardens, where a mouth smiles amid the greenery!

And, by God, its valley, which is the appointed place of

increase for love's delegation, if only you were among them!

In that valley wanders, passionately yearning,

a lover who sees yearning as a gain.

And, by God, the lovers' joys when

He addresses them from above and greets them!

And, by God, eyes that see God openly:

no oppression overtakes them, nor do they grow weary.

O gaze that bestowed radiance upon the heart!

After it, could the love-enslaved lover forget?

And, by God, how many an excellent maiden, if she smiled,

would shine with a light greater than dawn!

O delight of the eyes when she approaches!

O delight of the ears when she speaks!

How the tender branch is shamed when she bends!

How the two seas are shamed when she smiles!

If your heart is sick with love for her,

no salve remains for you but union with her,

especially in kissing her while embracing her,

when a wrist of hers has slipped beneath your neck.

He sees her when she reveals her beautiful face to him,

delighting in her and enjoying bliss before union.

As the eye beholds her, it savors from her

varied fruits whose produce never fails:

clusters from a vine, apples of a garden,

and pomegranates upon branches, with which the heart is enamored.

    The rose has what her cheeks have clothed it in;

wine has what her saliva and mouth contain.

    Beauty is distributed through her in one united whole;

how wondrous a single whole that is divided!

She reminds whoever looks of the Most Merciful,

in her entirety, and that forgetting is forbidden.

    Many diverse portions of beauty have been gathered in her;

    he utters glorification without faltering.

When she confronts sorrow's army with her face,

the army turns on its heels, defeated.

When youth's water flows through her branch,

he knows for certain that it cannot be defeated.

O suitor of the beautiful one, if you desire her,

this is the time for the dowry, paid in advance.

    Hate the faithless women for love of her;

then win her instead of them and enjoy bliss.

Remain unmarried to all besides her, for she

remains unmarried for one like you in Eden's gardens.

Fast through your nearer day, so that tomorrow you may

win the feast of breaking fast while others still fast.

    Advance, and do not settle for a troubled life;

none wins delights who does not advance.

If the entire world becomes constricted for you,

and no dwelling within it is known as yours,

come to Eden's gardens, for they are

your first dwellings, and there is your encampment.

But we are the enemy's captives; do you think

we shall return to our homelands and be safe?

They have said that when a stranger goes far away,

and his homelands grow distant, he is in pain.

What estrangement exceeds our estrangement, through which

our enemies have come to rule us?

Come to its gardens and its tents!

Come to a life there that never grows wearisome!

Come to the market where the

lovers meet—that market is known to those people.

    Take whatever you wish from it without paying a price;

the merchants have already paid in advance and surrendered.

Come to the Day of Increase, on which

the Lord of the Throne is visited: a festive day!

Come to a spacious valley there,

whose soil surpasses even the most fragrant musk.

There are platforms of light and silver there,

and of pure gold, which never break apart.

Around them are dunes of musk, seats

for those below them—this magnificent gift!

There they see the Most Merciful—exalted is His majesty—

as one sees the full moon, not merely in imagination,

and like the sun in clear weather, with nothing before its horizon

of cloud or haze casting shade there.

While they are enjoying their life and their happiness,

their provisions flowing to them and being apportioned,

suddenly a brilliant light appears to them:

'Peace upon you! You are pure and blessed.'

'Peace upon you!' They all hear

His greeting with their own ears when He greets them.

He says, 'Ask Me for what you desire; everything

you want is with Me. I am most merciful.'

    They all say, 'We ask You for Your pleasure;

You are the One who bestows goodness and shows mercy.'

He grants them this and calls their assembly to witness

it—exalted is God, for God is most generous.

By God, what excuse has a person who believes

in this, yet neither strives for it nor sends deeds ahead?

But success comes only through God; He

graciously singles out whom He wills for it and bestows blessings.

O you who sell this for a paltry, immediate price,

it is as though you do not know—but you will know.

    The journey's end

Offer yourself—may my soul ransom you—for it

is the price paid when it is surrendered.

Plunge into death's depths and ascend the stairways of

love, climbing to the summit in seeking their pleasure.

Deliver to them what they covenanted with you, if

you want them to give and deliver in return.

No abject soul has ever attained union,

nor has a servant won bliss through idleness.

If Su‘da has held you back, your

tormented heart lies captive, surrendered into her hands.

Yet she has favored another with union; the love

for her is yours, while the tale-bearer enjoys her.

Leave her, and console your soul for her with a garden

of knowledge, in whose meadows truth smiles.

Its fruit clusters have been brought within reach; whoever desires

its harvest obtains it however he wishes and eats.

Its gates have been opened, and it has adorned itself

for its suitors; beauty is distributed throughout it.

    فطوبَى لِمَنْ حلُّوا بِها وتنَعَّمُوا

    Its hospitality and its guest alike are good;

blessed are those who dwell there and enjoy bliss.

At its gates the caller to guidance stands:

'Come to the abode of happiness and gain!'

The Most Merciful has planted His plantings there

from among people; the Most Merciful knows His creatures best.

Whoever the Most Merciful plants there is

    happy; otherwise, misery is inevitable.
