When have my burning anguish and turmoil ever been eased

    by a slanderer’s gossip or a reprover’s counsel?

And it is enough for love that, when I seek support

from my heart, it answers me with a deserter’s intent.

As though a breeze from the east and north winds

had touched one beloved for his youth and virtues,

and set his figure swaying in a robe of beauty,

with the sway of a bending shoot of the bān tree.

And when he shot a glance, I said to his eyelid:

Is there an eye behind you, or an archer’s quiver?

Yet it is only a gazelle-like eye,

with which my noble beloved struck my hidden vital spots.

And surely the soul’s survival after parting from him

is proof that love is no killer.

And many a man said, when I opened my saddlebags

before you and my maiden verses traveled in praise of your eminence:

“Are you the one who fashioned the stars into a necklace

for the sun of the eminent to wear at the gathering?”

By God, your virtues could, if you wished, produce

    Quss’s eloquence from Baqil’s inarticulacy.

Time strove to wrong me; but when you took me into your care,

at your side, it did its utmost to foster my virtues.

So here I am, both complaining of it and thanking it,

and your generosity within it is the best provider and guardian.

And the festival whose festival you are has visited you,

with a radiant crescent lodged in the house of good fortune.

Longing for you wasted him until it left him

with a remnant of a body, as thin as a nail-paring.
