كدر العقود في نحور الكواعب
They saw smallpox marks on the expanse of his cheek,
Like necklace pearls on the throats of full-bosomed maidens.
وماand not هوhe إلاexcept البدرthe full moon لماwhen تكاملتreached perfection
وما هو إلا البدر لما تكاملت
محاسنهhis charms نقطنهthey dotted him بالكواكبwith stars
محاسنه نقطنه بالكواكب
And he is but the full moon: when
His charms reached perfection, they dotted him with stars.
وقالواand they said رمتهstruck him النائباتmisfortunes ضلالةًin error
وقالوا رمته النائبات ضلالةً
وماand not علمواthey knew أنthat العلىgreatness بالنوائبthrough adversities
وما علموا أن العلى بالنوائب
And, in error, they said, “Misfortunes have struck him,”
And they did not know that greatness comes through adversity.
