O you who weep for the dwelling at Kazimah,

and weeping for the dwelling springs from grief.

You exhausted your tears over a stone,

and squandered your patience over a tent peg.

So save it, for fear of a calamity:

do you feel safe today from tomorrow’s reversals?

It is your eye: had it not sinned, you would not have

    punished your eyelids with sleeplessness.

So you came to the water to divert it,

and water is death to the thirsty.

Woe, then, to your soul if it comes to drink,

and woe to it if it does not.

I approached and said, “I shall kiss him,

even if death lies in wait.”

Then I sipped the saliva of a smiling mouth,

more enticing and more delicious than honey.

Oh, where is patience, that I may seek it?

And perhaps I may be guided to fortitude.

The loved ones departed, and with them is

my heart: they stole it, and it has not returned.

And sickness wasted me away because of them,

so I was left without a heart and without a body.
