I stood with the lovers at every station,

Keeping the thread of tears unbroken after they began to flow.

And I saw only one who lavished his life

On a miser whose phantom fled with his sleep.

Beneath his gaze, he gave me a cup of his sweet saliva,

And made me many times drunker than his wine would.

The phantom of his image gives me hope of union,

And his doves' lament in the groves enraptures me.

And it is a wonder that distance between us should bring

Forgetfulness, though my eye is longing's sacred precinct.

And I sensed my heart rushing toward passion,

So I told it, 'Be in his protection against them both.'

And I did not know that the drunken languor of his gaze

Would make what lies behind his veil's pearls delightful to me.

    فمن أين للخطي حسن قوامه

    Grant that he lent the sun the radiance of his brow;

Then where did the Khatti spear get the beauty of his stature?

And if you deny that his form

Has girded on, from his eyes, the likeness of his sword,

Then do not deny it: the ornament of his neck

Is fashioned from his mouth and his speech.

As though the wide eyes had shared passion with him,

For they bear a trace of his lovesickness.

A youth whose wealth and foes have always

Been at risk from his generosity and his vengeance.

And if one traveling by night to the shade of his glory feared

Losing his way, generosity would call to him from ahead.

And I did not clothe him in the pearls of praise; rather,

I lent the stars of night the full moon of his perfection.
