How long will you be heedless of what is within you?

You surely distract yourself from what makes you sad

And how long will your heart dally with passionate longing?

And why does your heart get absorbed in playfulness?

لله أيام الوصال فإنها

لله أيام الوصال فإنها

أمل النفوس وطيب لهو اللاهي

أمل النفوس وطيب لهو اللاهي

How wondrous the days of union! For they are

By God, the days of union, for they are

the hope of souls and the sweetness of the reveler's play.

The hope of souls and the joy of the distracted

أيام صحبتنا الملاح ودأبنا

أيام صحبتنا الملاح ودأبنا

فيها اعتناق ظبا ورشف شفاه

فيها اعتناق ظبا ورشف شفاه

Days when we kept company with beauties, and our custom

The days of our sweet companionship and our habit

was embracing gazelles and sipping lips.

In it embracing gazelles and sipping lips

ومهاً تضاحكها البدور ملاحةً

ومهاً تضاحكها البدور ملاحةً

معدومة الأمثال والأشباه

معدومة الأمثال والأشباه

And oryxes with whom the full moons exchange lovely smiles,

And the eyebrows that laugh at me coquettishly

without equals or counterparts.

Matchless and incomparable

من كل فتكه اللحاظ إذا انثنت

من كل فتكه اللحاظ إذا انثنت

فتكت بقلب الخاشع الأواه

فتكت بقلب الخاشع الأواه

Each one deadly of glance, who, when she sways,

With every languid glance when she inclines

slays the heart of the humble, sighing one.

She captures the heart of the passionate worshipper

وتعمدتني النائبات ولم تزل

وتعمدتني النائبات ولم تزل

حتى انتصرت بنصر الله

حتى انتصرت بنصر الله

And misfortunes sought me out and did not cease,

Misfortunes have singled me out and have not ceased

until I triumphed through God's aid.

Until they were victorious by God's victory

ما زلت تلهو بالمكارم واللهى

ما زلت تلهو بالمكارم واللهى

حتى ظننا أنهن ملاهي

حتى ظننا أنهن ملاهي

You have always amused yourself with noble deeds and lavish gifts,

You kept playing with generosity, so we thought

until we thought them pastimes.

That they were amusements

كم من ندىً خلفي الغداة نبذته

كم من ندىً خلفي الغداة نبذته

وأري نوالك لا يزال تجاهي

وأري نوالك لا يزال تجاهي

How much bounty I have cast behind me this morning,

How much morning dew have you scattered

while I see your bounty still before me!

And I still see your kindness unabated

يا من إذا أمطرت سحائب جوده

يا من إذا أمطرت سحائب جوده

جاءت بلا مطلٍ ولا استكراه

جاءت بلا مطلٍ ولا استكراه

O you whose clouds of bounty, whenever they rain,

O you, when the clouds of your generosity rain

come with neither delay nor compulsion.

They come without stop or reluctance

مازلت أفتك بالزمان بعز ما

مازلت أفتك بالزمان بعز ما

أوليتنيه وللكرام أباهي

أوليتنيه وللكرام أباهي

I have ever struck down Time with the might of what

You remain triumphing over fate with the honor

you bestowed upon me, and I boast before the noble.

You have granted me, and I take pride in generosity

فاقبل به دعوى ابنة الفكر التي

فاقبل به دعوى ابنة الفكر التي

جاءتك في ثوبي حجىً وتناهي

جاءتك في ثوبي حجىً وتناهي

So accept through it the plea of thought's daughter, who

So accept the claim of the daughter of thought that

came to you in the two robes of wisdom and perfection.

Came to you in my poetry, bashful and recoiling

لا تشتمن بها الحسود فإنها

ذهب القلوب وجوهر الأفواه

Do not revile the envious with her, for she is

the gold of hearts and the jewel of mouths.

The soul of hearts and essence of mouths

ألبستها در الملايح قلادةً

فاضمن لها بلباس ثوب الجاه

I adorned her with the pearls of loveliness as a necklace;

I have adorned her with a necklace of witticisms

so ensure she is clothed in the robe of prestige.

So grant her in the garb of glory a safe haven
