بأَىِّwith what سلاحٍweapon أَمْor بأَيّةِwith what عُدَّةٍequipment
بأَىِّ سلاحٍ أَمْ بأَيّةِ عُدَّةٍ
طُرقْتَyou were assailed by night فغَالَتْكَso they slew you النُّحُوسُmisfortunes الأَشَائِمُbaleful
طُرقْتَ فغَالَتْكَ النُّحُوسُ الأَشَائِمُ
With what weapon, or with what equipment,
were you assailed by night, and slain by baleful misfortunes?
وعندكَand you had يدٌa hand لاnot يُرامُassailable وقُوَّةٌand strength
وعندكَ يدٌ لا يُرامُ وقُوَّةٌ
ورأيٌّand judgment وبيوتٌand houses منof العَزمِresolve صَارِمُunyielding
ورأيٌّ وبيوتٌ من العَزمِ صَارِمُ
Though you had an unassailable hand, and strength,
and judgment, and houses of unyielding resolve.
أَتتكَcame to you المناياdeath دونَpast ذلكَthat كلِّهِall of it
أَتتكَ المنايا دونَ ذلكَ كلِّهِ
فلاso let not يأمَنِtrust الأَيامَthe days بَعْدَكَafter you حازِمُa prudent man
فلا يأمَنِ الأَيامَ بَعْدَكَ حازِمُ
Death reached you, bypassing all of that;
so let no prudent man trust the days after you.
