Were I not above uttering satire,

thirst-maddened poems would have come to drink at your honor.

I kept advancing you my praise and granting you

my affection, lavishing my ardor and striving my utmost,

until you committed that hideous, disgraceful deed,

whose shame will not cease until eternity itself ends.

Suppose I excused you for it—would you be excused

by friendship's sacred bonds, the peoples, and the land?

You surrendered us to time's calamities, which devour us,

while you have wealth, kin, and children.

Far from it! After this, you will never prosper again (reading an apparent typo).

After our companionship, will anyone place their hopes in you?
