نحنُwe بقاياremnants طَعْنِthrusts القَناthe spears القَصْدِshattered
نحنُ بقايا طَعْنِ القَنا القَصْدِ
وراسياتِand steadfast pillars العَزَاءِpatience والجَلَدِand fortitude
وراسياتِ العَزَاءِ والجَلَدِ
We are survivors of the thrusts of shattered spears,
And steadfast pillars of patience and fortitude.
جَدّدْrenew بناthrough us أَيُّهاO الوزيرُvizier عُلاًglory
جَدّدْ بنا أَيُّها الوزيرُ عُلاً
تَسحَبُtrails أذيالَthe hems ريطهاits robes الجُدُدِnew
تَسحَبُ أذيالَ ريطها الجُدُدِ
Renew through us, O vizier, a glory
That trails the hems of its new robes.
فقدfor indeed طلبناwe sought سِوَاكَother than you منone who يَعشقُloves الthe
فقد طلبنا سِوَاكَ من يَعشقُ ال
ذكرrenown ويشتاقُهُand longs for it فلمbut did not نَجِدِwe find
ذكر ويشتاقُهُ فلم نَجِدِ
For we sought someone other than you who loves
Renown and longs for it, but found none.
ماnot اعتقدَtreasured الناسُpeople كالثناءِlike praise وانْand even if
ما اعتقدَ الناسُ كالثناءِ وانْ
تَنافسواthey compete فيin ذخائرِtreasures العُقَدِthe necklaces
تَنافسوا في ذخائرِ العُقَدِ
People have treasured nothing to equal praise, though
They compete for treasured necklaces.
لولاwere it not for ندىgenerosity حاتِمٍHatim وَسُؤدَدُهُand his nobility
لولا ندى حاتِمٍ وَسُؤدَدُهُ
ماnot فَخَرَتْboasted طيٌّTayy علىover أَحَدِanyone
ما فَخَرَتْ طيٌّ على أَحَدِ
Were it not for Hatim's generosity and nobility,
Tayy would never have vaunted itself above anyone.
ماnot تركتleft كَفُّهُhis hand لوارثهِfor his heir
ما تركت كَفُّهُ لوارثهِ
وفراًwealth سِوىexcept الحمدِpraise آخرَthe end of الأَبدِeternity
وفراً سِوى الحمدِ آخرَ الأَبدِ
His hand left his heir
No wealth save praise, to the end of eternity.
أَبقىleft behind زيادٌZiyad آلِthe house of جَفْنَهَJafna والand the
أَبقى زيادٌ آلِ جَفْنَهَ وال
منذرِMundhir كنزاًa treasure منamong أَنفعِthe most useful العُدَدِresources
منذرِ كنزاً من أَنفعِ العُدَدِ
Ziyad left the house of Jafna and
Al-Mundhir a treasure among the most useful resources.
خَالدةٌeverlasting فيهمabout them مدائُحهُhis panegyrics
خَالدةٌ فيهم مدائُحهُ
وهمand they تُرابٌdust يمورُswirls فيthrough البلدِthe land
وهم تُرابٌ يمورُ في البلدِ
His praises of them endure forever,
While they are dust swirling through the land,
منfrom بعدِafter ماthat صُرِّفَتْwere deployed مواكبهمtheir retinues
من بعدِ ما صُرِّفَتْ مواكبهم
بينَbetween طِرادِjousting الكُمَاةِthe armored warriors والطَّرَدِand the chase
بينَ طِرادِ الكُمَاةِ والطَّرَدِ
After their retinues had been deployed
Between armored warriors' jousting and the chase.
تُلحسُare licked away آثارُهمtheir traces كماjust as لُحِسَتْwere licked away
تُلحسُ آثارُهم كما لُحِسَتْ
آثارُthe traces عادٍʿAd والحيّand the clan منfrom أُدَدِUdad
آثارُ عادٍ والحيّ من أُدَدِ
Their traces are licked away, just as were
The traces of ʿAd and the clan descended from Udad.
ماnot حلَّsettled بينَbetween الوسَادَينthe two cushions فتىًa young man
ما حلَّ بينَ الوسَادَين فتىً
مثلكَlike you أَقذيتَyou put a mote in ناظرَthe eye of الحَسَدِenvy
مثلكَ أَقذيتَ ناظرَ الحَسَدِ
No young man has sat between the two cushions
Like you; you have put a mote in envy's eye.
وأَنتَand you فردٌone تُضافُare added عِدَّتُهمtheir number
وأَنتَ فردٌ تُضافُ عِدَّتُهم
اليكَto you والفردُand one أَولُthe first of العَددِnumbers
اليكَ والفردُ أَولُ العَددِ
And you are one; their numbers are added
To you, and one is the first of numbers.
قرَّبكَdrew you close الملكُthe king واستقامَand became upright فماso no
قرَّبكَ الملكُ واستقامَ فما
فيin متنهِhis blade والنصابand the hilt منany أَودِcrookedness
في متنهِ والنصاب من أَودِ
The king drew you close and stood upright; no
Crookedness remains in his blade or hilt.
كنتَyou were عليهِover him بالغيبin absence مُؤتَمَنَاًentrusted
كنتَ عليهِ بالغيب مُؤتَمَنَاً
والروحُand the soul مأمونةٌtrusted علىwith الجَسَدِthe body
والروحُ مأمونةٌ على الجَسَدِ
You were trusted with him in his absence,
And the soul is trusted with the body.
أصبحَbecame منwhoever رامَهُsought to strike him ببائقةٍwith harm
أصبحَ من رامَهُ ببائقةٍ
كالطيرِlike a bird يخشىfears غوائلَthe perils of الرَّصدِthose lying in wait
كالطيرِ يخشى غوائلَ الرَّصدِ
Whoever sought to harm him became
Like a bird fearing the dangers of those lying in wait.
حامcircled وقدand already أَبصرَsaw الرماةَthe archers فلمso did not
حام وقد أَبصرَ الرماةَ فلم
يَصْدُرْdepart from water بأَشجانِهwith its sorrows ولمand did not يَرِدِcome to water
يَصْدُرْ بأَشجانِه ولم يَرِدِ
It circled, having seen the archers, and neither
Departed with its sorrows nor came to the water.
لاdo not تَأْمَنَنَّever feel safe from نَبْوَةَa hostile turn العدوِّthe enemy وانْand even if
لا تَأْمَنَنَّ نَبْوَةَ العدوِّ وانْ
ناصحَcounsels sincerely يوماًone day فَغِشهُthen his deceit لِغدِfor tomorrow
ناصحَ يوماً فَغِشهُ لِغدِ
Never feel safe from an enemy's hostile turn, even if
He counsels sincerely one day; his deceit is for tomorrow.
شيمةُa trait غدرٍof treachery وانْand even if أَخَلَّhe falls short بهاin it
شيمةُ غدرٍ وانْ أَخَلَّ بها
كامِنَةٌlurking فيin طَبعِهِhis nature الأَسدِlion-like
كامِنَةٌ في طَبعِهِ الأَسدِ
A habit of treachery, even if he neglects it,
Lurks within his lion-like nature.
لاmay ... not عَدِمَتْbe deprived of ظِلَّكَyour shade الرعيةُthe subjects منas
لا عَدِمَتْ ظِلَّكَ الرعيةُ من
مُباشرٍone directly tending للأمورِto affairs مُفتْقِدِwatchful
مُباشرٍ للأمورِ مُفتْقِدِ
May the subjects never lose your shade—
You who tend to affairs directly and keep watch.
أَنتَyou عليهمtoward them وانْand even if أَخَفْتَهمُyou frighten them
أَنتَ عليهم وانْ أَخَفْتَهمُ
أَشفقُmore compassionate منthan والدٍa father علىtoward وَلَدِa child
أَشفقُ من والدٍ على وَلَدِ
Though you frighten them, you are toward them
More tender than a father toward his child.
عَجُّواthey cried out الىto اللهِGod يسأَلونَthey ask لكَfor you الthe
عَجُّوا الى اللهِ يسأَلونَ لكَ ال
عمرَlifespan وطولَand length of البقاءِcontinuance والخُلَدِand immortality
عمرَ وطولَ البقاءِ والخُلَدِ
They cried out to God, asking for you
Life, long continuance, and immortality.
كلevery منيبٍpenitent بنيةٍwith an intention خَلَصَتْbecame pure
كل منيبٍ بنيةٍ خَلَصَتْ
وكلand every داعٍsupplicant بمقلةٍwith an eye ويَدِand a hand
وكل داعٍ بمقلةٍ ويَدِ
Every penitent with a pure intention,
And every supplicant with eye and hand.
لمdid not تدنُyou draw near ياO أَبعدَfarthest of الكواكبِthe planets ياO
لم تدنُ يا أَبعدَ الكواكبِ يا
كَيوانُKaywan منto مجدِهِhis glory ولمand did not تَكَدِyou nearly do so
كَيوانُ من مجدِهِ ولم تَكَدِ
You have not drawn near, O farthest of planets, O
Kaywan, to his glory, nor even come close.
كنتَyou were مضيئاًradiant فماso not خفيتَyou were hidden عنfrom الthe
كنتَ مضيئاً فما خفيتَ عن ال
أَعينِeyes اِلاَّexcept منbecause of شِدَّةِthe intensity of الكَمَدِgrief
أَعينِ اِلاَّ من شِدَّةِ الكَمَدِ
You were radiant; you were hidden from
Eyes only by the intensity of grief.
ليI have حاجةٌa need انْif تَقُمْyou fulfill بواجبهاits due obligation
لي حاجةٌ انْ تَقُمْ بواجبها
أَشكرْI give thanks عليهاfor it وانْand if تَزِدْyou add more أَزِدِI add more
أَشكرْ عليها وانْ تَزِدْ أَزِدِ
I have a need: if you fulfill what it requires,
I shall thank you for it; if you give more, so shall I.
وقبلهاand before it ماnot أزادَنيgave me more عضدُʿAdud الthe
وقبلها ما أزادَني عضدُ ال
ملكِMulk (dominion) علىfor مثلِهاits like فَلَمso did not أُرِدِI desire
ملكِ على مثلِها فَلَم أُرِدِ
And before this, ʿAdud al-Mulk gave me no increase
For its like, nor did I desire one.
ماnot كانَwas تَركيmy neglect لكَto you الزيارةَthe visit عنfrom
ما كانَ تَركي لكَ الزيارةَ عن
قَصْدٍdeliberate intent ولكنbut ضَرباًa kind منof الفَنَدِfolly
قَصْدٍ ولكن ضَرباً من الفَنَدِ
My neglect of visiting you was not
Deliberate, but a kind of folly,
حتىuntil تلقيتنيyou received me بضربٍwith a kind منof الthe
حتى تلقيتني بضربٍ من ال
بشرِgood cheer كَمتنِlike the surface of الغَدِيرِthe pool مُطَّرِدِflowing steadily
بشرِ كَمتنِ الغَدِيرِ مُطَّرِدِ
Until you met me with a kind of
Good cheer, flowing like the surface of a pool.
وقيعةُa rock-pool الطودِthe mountain صادفتْmet ظمأًthirst
وقيعةُ الطودِ صادفتْ ظمأً
فهيso it شِفاءٌa cure لغُلةِfor the burning thirst of الكَبِدِthe liver
فهي شِفاءٌ لغُلةِ الكَبِدِ
The mountain's rock-pool met with thirst,
So it is a cure for the liver's burning thirst.
وكانand it was رأْياًa decision لمdid not آتِهِI undertake it عبثاًidly
وكان رأْياً لم آتِهِ عبثاً
وَفَّقَنيgranted me success اللهُGod فيهِin it لِلْرَشَدِtoward sound judgment
وَفَّقَني اللهُ فيهِ لِلْرَشَدِ
And it was a choice I did not make idly;
God guided me in it to sound judgment.
هذاthis الكلامُspeech الذيwhich خُصِصْتَyou were singled out بهwith it
هذا الكلامُ الذي خُصِصْتَ به
أَخَصُّmore closely allied بالخَلداتِwith everlasting things منthan أَحَدِUhud
أَخَصُّ بالخَلداتِ من أَحَدِ
These words, with which you have been singled out,
Are more deserving of immortality than Uhud.
قولٌspeech هوit is الماءُwater لذَّwas sweet مَطْعَمُهُits taste
قولٌ هو الماءُ لذَّ مَطْعَمُهُ
وكلُّand every قولٍspeech سِواهُbesides it كالزَّبَدِlike foam
وكلُّ قولٍ سِواهُ كالزَّبَدِ
Speech that is water, sweet to taste;
And every other speech is like foam.
