The wayward men of Banū ʿAdī never ceased

neglecting our rights among all they neglected.

Harming them was forbidden to us,

yet they grazed at will upon our honor.

They delighted that Time slumbered, heedless of them,

yet stayed awake, obsessed with us.

So gloating choked them with laughter,

while tears of anguish choked us,

until the days drew back from them,

with those men's gore upon their claws.

Were I able, their anguish would be dispelled,

    but my resourcefulness is powerless.

They themselves blunted my edge against the foe,

and fettered both my forearms, so I cannot stretch them out.
