علىdespite ذاكَthat عِرضيmy honor والبناءُand the frame جميلُfair
The sovereign of the earth says, “Your body has grown gaunt.”
The king of the earth says, "Your body is thin."
Even so, my honor stands, and the praise I earn is fair.
Even so, my honor and my frame are fair.
فاحسنُfor the finest ماwhat فيin الهندوانيthe Indian sword أَنهthat it is
نحيفٌslender رقيقُthin الشفرتينِthe two edges صقيلُpolished
For the finest thing about an Indian blade is that it is
For the finest thing about an Indian sword is that it is
slender, fine at both edges, and burnished.
Slender, thin on both edges, and polished.
وفيand in أَعوجياتِAwaj-bred mares الرهانِthe race اذاwhen صفتْthey are pure-bred

Aʿwaj-bred racehorses, when they line up,
And in Awaj-bred racing mares, when of pure stock,
and hard spear-shafts and arrows alike are slender.
And in solid spears and arrows, there is slenderness.
فانْfor if أَكُI am شختاًslight فيamong الرجالِmen فاننيthen indeed I am
لأَثقلof the heaviest ماwhat لاnot يحملونthey carry حَمولُa strong bearer
So though I may be gaunt among men, I
For if I am slight among men, I am indeed
am a mighty bearer of the heaviest loads they cannot bear.
A bearer of the heaviest burdens they cannot carry.
أقومُI straighten أَغصانَthe branches الخطوبِof adversities اذاwhen التوتْthey twist

I straighten adversity’s branches when they twist,
I straighten the branches of adversity when they twist,
with gentleness—and among men, my equal is rare.
With my gentleness; among men, one like me is rare.
أَرىI see الملكَthe king المنصورَal-Mansur أَنكرfound fault with مِضربيmy cutting edge
وأَىُّand what حسامٍkeen sword ليسis not فيهin it فُلُولُnicks
I see that King al-Manṣūr has taken exception to my stroke—
I see King al-Mansur has found fault with my cutting edge;
yet what keen sword is without a nick?
And what keen sword has no nicks?
وكمand how many لكof yours عندىwith me منof يدٍa favor وصنيعةٍand a kindness

How many favors and acts of kindness from you I owe,
And how many favors and kindnesses I owe you—
before which my gratitude falls short, however long it runs.
My thanks fall short of them, however long they grow.

And how many a word bestowed on me, and many a glance—
And many a word bestowed on me, and a glance—
my acceptance is proof that I caught it.
Acceptance is proof that we have noticed it.
اذاif صحَّis assured ليto me منof حسنِgoodness رأَيكَyour regard لمحةٌa glimpse
فليسthen there is no لمقدورٍfor anything fated عليَّagainst me سبيلُa path
If I am assured of one glimpse of your gracious regard,
If a glimpse of your good regard is assured me,
then nothing fate decrees has any power over me.
Then nothing fated has a path to reach me.
