Shall I overcome this age, or will it overcome me?
Shall I overcome this life or will it overcome me,
My resolve is with me, and the Mashrafi sword is my companion.
While my determination is with me and Al-Mushrifi accompanies me?

I shield my ribs from grappling with passion,
I protect my ribs from falling in love,
yet leave them a target for piercing spears.
And I leave that to the spears of brave knights.

Honor is only a part of my character,
Honor is but a part of my nature,
and glory only one desire among my desires.
And glory is just one of my goals.

You claim, my heart, that you are my companion,
And you, my heart, claim that you are my companion,
yet you are a spearhead in my innards and breastbones.
While you are just a grindstone amid thorns and tribulations.

Were it not for the one whose secret dwelling you have become,
I would pour you out amid the streaming tears.
I would have poured you amid the falling tears.

What is life but to fill your stomach with wealth
and filling the earth with prized, long-bodied steeds,
And fill wealth with slaves and maidservants?

I rose at the abode of the beloved with my tears,
while its ruins choked on calamities.
While its ruins have risen with calamities.

When the winds play with its soil,
they released powdered musk among the playgrounds.
The musk is crushed between playthings.

O intimate of the heart without its veil,
your friend meets your love with no doorkeeper in the way.
Your intimate does not meet your love with a frown.

Help me with a sword or an excuse you can make,
otherwise, today you aid calamities.
Otherwise today you are the helper of tribulations.

The days tell me, 'I have endowed you with wealth.'
The days tell me, “I have appointed you rich,”
But am I, a taker, the equal of a giver?
But am I one who takes anything like a giver?

every eager seeker chokes me in taking it.
Every aspirant shines when he takes from them.

I count the stars of the night, the sand, and the pebbles,
but counting wonders wearies me.
But I tire counting the wonders.

My time is a time whose turns

Have grown old, but my patience does not seek but my requests.

Whenever it dragged me into misfortune,
I receive the turn it sends with welcomes,
I faced it with acceptance and calm.

As one who climbs up a ladder accepts what is handed to him,
or else as he meets the fronts of battalions.
Or as the squadrons of horsemen accept their fallen.

So O young man of generosity, do not ask him for a pittance, for he
thinks the sea insufficient bounty for a drinker.
Sees the sea as insufficient to quench the thirst of a drinker.

He is generous with what gives you all your land,
and you think he has given you some of the clouds.
Yet you reckon he has only given you some clouds.

No day has passed when his swords

Did not embrace the necks of the enemies or the necks of fate.

Who compares my merits to the high calamities of death.

then I said: 'Tall spears are their equal in rank.'
Then I say fortunes are like it in positions.

I remembered you when the sword refused to close its eyelid
and dragged war's train over the withers.
And dragged the tail of war over the dust.

Whose abodes are preoccupied with taxes?

The sails of death are raised in its sides
when the winds of cleaving swords rise within it.
Whenever the winds of destruction are raised in it.

You established feet there during clashes.

With the turbulence of surging waves colliding.

You stabbed the heart of the addressee with the chest of a spear.

Mountains bow low at their call
and fall short of their necks and shoulders.
And necks and litters become too short for them.

Their moustaches are knitted with frowns.

Who is quick to respond when food is served hungrily.

If he is not beaten, he will not repent.
From his foolishness if he is not beaten, then he is no penitent?

I did not respond if I was not called to pray,
even if my soul drank skinsful of draughts.
Even if my soul drank from the street gutters.

A pride that had so often attained the heights forbade it,
That was pride, for long it reached highness
and tore fault-finders' breasts with rage.
And cut wrath in the chests of the envious.

and my enemy thought as Kisra thought of Hajib.
And the enemy guessed - guessed like Chosroes with his frown.

Then this is the time for penetrating stars.

and stood upon a clear line of truth.
And I revolted against a limit of truth without lover.

their lions held captive by foxes.
While their lion is shackled for the foxes.

أَلفتُهمhave cherished them فيin المجدِglory اِلفَthe affection of الحَبائِبِloved ones
Who will tell the house of al-Muhallab that I
Let the Āl Mahlab know that I
have cherished them in glory as dearly as loved ones?
Have befriended them in glory like intimate friends.
فآليتُso I swore أَلاَّnot to أَمدحَpraise الدهرَthroughout time غيرَهمanyone but them
ولوeven if عَرَضَoffered الأقوامُthe peoples ليto me بالرغائِبِcoveted gifts
I swore to praise none but them as long as time lasts,
So I decided not to praise the times but them
even if others offered me coveted gifts.
Even if people tempted me with wishes.
همthey سلَّمواsurrendered دهريmy age اليَّto me فَشِلْوُهُso its torn remains
لقاًcast away بينbetween أَنيابيmy fangs وبينَand between مَخَالبيmy claws
They surrendered my age to me; its torn remains lie
They surrendered my life to me, so tear it apart
cast between my fangs and my claws.
Between my fangs and claws.
أُمزِّقُهُI tear it apart ماas مزَّقَتْنيtore me apart صُروفُهُits turns
وآخذُand I exact منهfrom it ثَارَvengeance of كلِّevery مُطَالِبِclaimant
I tear it apart as its turns tore me apart,
I will shred it like its turns shredded me,
and exact from it every claimant's vengeance.
And take revenge on it for all my requests.
