Shall I excuse my people while the spears reproach?

And that is a grave calamity in this age.

O Saʿd son of Zayd, surely Nubata's Saʿd

has raced without being outstripped, while you are Tamim.

    ولَلْموتُ خيرٌ أن يُلامَ حَميمُ

    Meeting death would surely be sweet rather than your reproach;

and death is surely better than a loved one's being blamed.

I invited the sons of Sasan, offering no resistance,

to plunder my wealth—and a noble man is noble.

And that was not from love for them, but rather I

show them how I stand firm despite hatred.

Ah, many a day I have turned their steeds back

to the tribe, bearing the marks of spear-thrusts.

on the plain of Nitaʿ, when we dealt out shares among them,

while Hawdha, like a dog, did not hold out.

That evening, had Kisra sought his goal,

he would have ended up in rawhide bonds, despised.

What time gone by, then, do you long to have return

to you—and what life do you not reproach?

Ah, would that I knew: shall I spend a night

with no creditor of sorrows laying claim to us?

And if Time grants me my wish, shall I

be weary of my night, while the night of swift she-camels is wearisome?

    I made the sword's white gleam a co-wife to fair-skinned women,

though I am mad with longing for them.

I roam the horizons of the lands, as though I

were guarantor of what calamities have in store.

If I do not launch a raid against the East,

amid whose terrors I sleep and put others to sleep—

when it is ascribed to me, its mention causes miscarriage,

without fear of it—then I am surely ignoble.

with men who deem humiliation the gravest plight,

and deem calamity slight, though it is immense.

Their palms are clouds for those who seek bounty,

and their swords are foes to the mail-clad.

And how can I fear calamities, when before them

stand merciful ones, with none found to show them mercy:

my two hands, my sword, the white-blazed steed, and a slender spear,

and a judgment that severs what binds affairs together.

The hardship of lodgings reminds me of a dwelling

where night is dawn and the winds are a gentle breeze.

I shall place the tips of spearheads above it,

hovering over the hearts of those who lodge there.
