كذلِكَthus دأبُhabit أيّاميmy days ودَابيand my habit
Reproach seldom echoes between us.
Little reproach between us, that's how my days and nights go by
Such is the habit of my days, and mine.
Perhaps my patience with the vicissitudes of nights will soften their roughness
عسىperhaps صَبْريmy patience علىwith نُوَبِcalamities اللّياليthe nights
يُليّنُsoftens منof خَلائِقِهاtheir dispositions الصِّعابِthe harsh ones
Perhaps my patience with the nights' calamities
I have turned to forgive him out of kindness
will soften their harsh dispositions.
And I have not turned to my pride and rage
فزعتُI sought refuge إلىto جميلِgracious الصّفحِforgiveness عنهاtoward them
ولمand did not أفزعْI seek refuge إلىto ظُفُريmy claw ونابيand my fang
I sought refuge in gracious forgiveness toward them,
Loyalty is gone so I no longer hope
and did not seek refuge in my claw and fang.
For the loyalty of a companion after youth
وقدand indeed ذهبَhas gone الوَفاءُloyalty فلسْتُso I do not أرجوhope
وفاءَloyalty مصاحبٍa companion بعدafter الشَّبابِyouth
Loyalty has gone, and I no longer hope
Does he intend betrayal or has betrayal appeared?
for a companion's loyalty after youth.
For betrayal is the trait of wild beasts
أأزْمَعَdid he resolve?
فإنّfor indeed الغَدْرَtreachery منamong شيمِthe traits الذّئابِwolves
Did he resolve to forget, or depart treacherously?
Whenever my love made a land flourish
For treachery is among the traits of wolves.
Travel flowed angrily from my clothes
وكنتُand I was إذاwhen نَبَتْproved inhospitable بهَوايto my desire أرضٌa land
يَسُلُّdraws out السّيرُtravel عَضْباًa keen blade منfrom ثيابيmy garments
And whenever a land rebuffed my desire,
Wise one, when the wasteland deceives me
travel would draw a keen blade from my garments:
Sorceress of mirage, vanishing of family
لَبيباًdiscerning حينwhen تَخْدَعُنيdeceives me فَلاةُa desert
رَقوصُdancing الآلِthe heat-haze ساحرةُbewitching السَّرابِthe mirage
discerning when a desert deceived me,
And cutter of ties, each day
its heat-haze dancing, its mirage bewitching;
Galloping in the desert, slipping the rider
وقَطّاعَand a severer القرائنِties كلَّevery يومٍday
علىacross البيداءِthe wilderness مُنْدَلِقَsurging forth الرّكابِthe riding camels
and severing ties each day,
I pardon when requests please me
across the wilderness, with riding camels surging onward.
And shame stays not with seekers
أعِفُّI exercise restraint إذاwhen المَطالِبُthe sought-after gains أعجَبَتْنيentice me
ولاand not يَبْقىremains الحَياءُmodesty معwith الطِّلابِimportunate seeking
I restrain myself when sought-after gains entice me,
If drink led to reproach
and modesty does not endure importunate seeking.
Then I would have desisted from the coldness of drink
ولوand if كانwere الشّرابُthe drink يجرentails منّاًboastful reminders of favors
إذاًthen لصددْتُI would surely turn away عنfrom بَرْدِcoolness الشّرابِthe drink
Were a drink to entail boastful reminders of a favor,
Sincere nature that gives you gentleness
I would turn away from the drink's coolness.
As gentleness is given despite the tightening of headbands
صَميمُpure سَجيّةٍinnate disposition يُعْطيكَgives you هَوناًwith ease
كماas يُعطىis given علىwith شَدِّtightening العِصابِthe headband
A man of pure disposition gives to you with ease,
My friend rules me, he intended injustice
as gifts are given with the headband drawn tight.
So I judge for the enemy and do not support him
يُحكِّمنيmakes me judge الصّديقُthe friend أرادَintended ظُلماًinjustice
فأحكمُso I rule للعدوِّfor the enemy ولاand do not أُحابيshow favoritism
A friend makes me judge, intending injustice,
And I love all who are annoyed and aloof
so I rule for the enemy and show no favoritism.
Who flee to the dovecote from insult

يَفِرُّflees إلىto الحِمامِdeath منfrom السِّبابِinsults
And I love every proud man stung by affront,
When I compare him to rain in generosity
who flees from insults into death.
And the sharpness of a sword, your strong rhetoric
إذاwhen شَبّهْتُهُI liken him بالغَيثِto rain جُوداًin generosity
ونصلِand the blade السّيفِthe sword عزكَhe bests you فيin الخِطابِspeech
When I liken him to rain in generosity,
Not all firmness lies in the battlefields
and to a sword's blade, he bests you in speech.
Nor all gentleness in the clouds
وماand not كلُّall الصّرامةِstern resolve فيin المَواضيthe keen swords
ولاnor كلُّall السّماحَةِgenerosity فيin السّحابِthe clouds
Not all stern resolve lies in keen swords,
I say to our time, and it has something to say
nor all generosity in clouds.
To something it was silent in answering
أقولُI say لدَهْرِناto our age ولهand it has مقالٌsomething to say

I say to our age, which has something to say:
Misfortunes have uncovered us from difficulties
For some reason you have fallen silent in reply.
You have cut hearts with them while you are aloof
تَعراناbeset us النوائبُmisfortunes عنfrom خُطوبٍcalamities
قَطَعْتَyou broke بهاwith them القُلوبَthe hearts وأنتَwhile you نابِaloof

Misfortunes beset us with calamities
For your horses have mounted me wrongfully
with which you broke our hearts, while standing aloof.
With no justice for you in reckoning

For Abu Shujaʿ's cavalry has now ridden you down,
A young man who uncovered waterholes from their mud
with a humiliation you had not reckoned on.
And opened every door to generosity
فتىًa young man كشفَcleared المَشارِبَthe watering places عنof قَذاهاtheir refuse
وفتّحَand opened wide فيin المكارمِnoble deeds كلَّevery بابِdoor
A young man who cleared the watering places of their refuse,
And postponed the stumbling of the offender gently
and opened every door to noble deeds.

يُقَدّمُplaces first زَجرَهُhis reprimand قبلَbefore العِقابِpunishment
He patiently grants respite to the offender's lapse,
Through him the insights of every matter were known
placing his reprimand before punishment.
And the occurrence of resolve and correctness through them

Through him, discerning minds in every affair have learned
And a darkness of perplexities, it spares
where firm resolve and right judgment lie.

And in many a dark, engulfing ordeal, he suffices
The neglected morning becomes
in place of counsels and companions.

Lit with every flaming torch
Death takes his noon repose in the eagle's shade.

They forgot their dreams under the calamities
spear-sections that jostle together at their joints.

They forgot restraint beneath the lofty spears,
If their throats are tears
and angry men have no restraint.

I hope for your favorable judgment in taking me under your patronage,
And I hope from your help a sea that floods
and favorable judgment is among the greatest rewards.

I have not been slow in receiving your palm
reckless in its waves, mad in its surging flood.

I have not found your hand slow in giving,
If the veil were of no benefit
despite the hardships of distance and nearness.
The heart would have no need for a veil

If a veil served no benefit,
I was between us a vineyard, I deter
the heart would have no need of a veil.

And, with Kirman between us, I judged
And I observe from you one day in consequences
against the enemies' hopes, pronouncing victory yours.

Your spear trims them, fog between them

And a connection of necessity, not affection
pruning the lizards' thorns among them.

A joining of necessity, not a joining of affection,
I saw people when you are absent from them
is the embrace of subjugated spears.
Dispersed in darkness without flames

I have seen people, when you are absent from them,
They are a crop which your help harvests
like a night-traveler in darkness without a flame.

They are a crop: your bounty holds for them
If only the rainclouds were built
the place of water and soil.

Would that the longing of the two dust-clouds could take form,
You have taught the battlefields
and tell wondrous marvels of you.

And you—the keen swords have learned from you
For God has bared no sword
the stirring of noble ardor in combat.
Except you, over skulls and necks

For God has unsheathed no keen sword
but you against skulls and necks.
