    O our life—and you are life itself—and I only

call you so as long as passion clings to my ribs.

Do you remember the pledge, that night—a night

when chastity praised your conduct and mine?

The stars lined up toward their setting, and nothing was gained

but conversation and a farewell kiss.

And your fear of the talebearers’ gaze during a pause

in which parting almost became my intercessor?

As for the ruins, they are free of my passion,

yet they share my abasement and submission.

For I am the one who offered closeness, yet was not welcomed,

and I am the one who called to what could not hear.

What destroyed that union, though it was favorable

to a willing partner, and time was utterly obedient?

Had the days been fair in their judgments,

they would not have denied you something within reach.
