My two friends, do not hurry, and leave me,

And lodge in the abode of prudence, and wait for me.

This faith was not the practice of one man,

And from it has arisen today what you both see.

A spark burns the great trees of the two valleys,

And gathers a man's fortune after balking.

As though you two did not know the war of Wāʾil,

And what it carried off of spear and stallion,

    And Kulayb's killing over a she-camel's offense,

Though he had feared no offender's crime.

And ʿAbs unleashed their swords over a wager,

So with them they ended lives, though the swords themselves perish.

And the shaggy-necked pressed their throats

Against the heat of unerring blows and spear-thrusts.

Is there no man to draw me out of an abyss

Whose two sides have collapsed upon me in its depths?

    رأى الدهرَ يَرمي صفحتي فرَماني

    And an ally, like the wolf's ally, scented his fresh blood;

He saw Time shooting at my flank, and shot at me too.

    فألاّ دَعاني والرماحُ دوانِ

    He challenged me with the breadth of sand between us;

Why not challenge me when the spears were near?

If my spear cannot reach his heart,

Then my tongue is my spearpoint in people's hearts.

    فعلم سنى الضّحكَ حين أتاني

    He burdened the riders of the road with his threat;

And when it reached me, it taught my tooth to laugh.

I told whoever delivered the message: Tell him,

‘You will disown this utterance when you see me.’

He fell, struck down by the threat, as though I

Had curled my fingers around a Samharī spear against him.

Is it because Saʿd gained all glory

That you have prevailed in hatred and rancor?

Their bones have decayed beneath the earth,

Yet your rage does not decay through time's vicissitudes.

Turning about in their folds and striped cloaks—

O sons of Wāʾil—woe to the worst of times!

Does the beauty of young men's bodies benefit them

When their reputations are not fair?

Do not make beauty your measure of a young man:

Not every polished blade of iron is Yemeni.

By my life, error led our riding beasts

To the worst creature among living things.

They refused to moisten our throats in the midday heat,

While the beasts' eyes bled from streaming tears.

Had they lodged beside Wahb, he would have cut their ropes

And their burdens from shoulder and throat.

He would have tucked their knees against their bellies

And said: ‘Come to my gardens before the watering pools.’

Indeed, the young man I visited after our estrangement

Is the most generous man who walks on two feet.

He served me welcome in a cup of cheerfulness:

‘Welcome indeed! You are honored, not humiliated.’

Tell the tall, proud men of Kaʿb ibn ʿĀmir,

And single out the clan's chiefs among Ghaṭafān,

And Bakr, those dwelling in al-Qanān, and Ṭayyiʾ,

And its followers whom the two mountains embrace:

Go forth and settle across the land, for I

Have settled in this world's mightiest place.

Despite the weakness and frailty of the ropes, I have clung

To the strongest rope that two hands have ever grasped.

Now the fates fear my arrows,

And Time's calamities seek safe-conduct from me.

    كَفى اللهُ وهبا شرَّها وكفاني

    Baseness and treachery are a habit among people;

God has spared Wahb their evil, and spared me.

He guarded me against deceitful suspicion and told me,

‘Your cares are among my cares; your affairs are mine.’

My ribs had been unable to settle,

And my heart would not rest from its pounding.

    وأجللتُه عن مَطلَبي فَبداني

    I called another to noble deeds, yet he answered me;

I deemed him above my request, so he took the initiative with me.

He brought it as a deed worthy of Kaʿb and Ḥātim,

The innate nature of a purebred, keen on both edges.

And a noble deed, rare in this age,

He caught as it ran without a rein.

I have a need whose pursuit, without you, would be hard

For everyone in the land, distant or near.

Those who strive hurried toward it, racing to attain it,

Yet theirs, by your life, is a feeble striving.

They shrank from their opponents when there shook

The spear-points, and the two forces met.

Where did you turn away, while the neighbor of your houses

Tugs at the two ropes of pledged protection and surety?

He spent the night on the walls, watching their strength—

The two wings of a raven about to fly.

If God does not permit what you seek,

An unaided man helps you with your needs.

    فَما يُمكن الأحصانُ كلَّ أوانِ

    Make good through this the claim of noble conduct, and uphold it;

For stallions are not available at every moment.

How many a powerful man's help I have passed over

To come to you, with saliva remaining but no courage.

You grant protection against enemies while spear-thrusts rage,

And white blades and heads clash together.

Whenever a need of mine was barred

By day and night, neither offering an excuse,

I laid its blame upon cruel fate,

And did not charge my friends with my time's guilt.

I marvel at this age: how can it oppress us

With all its own abasement and disgrace?

And ill omens visit us in it, even after

The stars of night and the two luminaries have seen you.

    فما هذه الدنيا وما الثَّقلانِ

    Were there a creature above them, you would be above it;

What is this world, and what are humans and jinn?

I saw my tongue envy my thoughts of you,

And my two lips envy it in praising you.

O Lord, grant me union with Wahb and nearness to him,

And shatter the love of whomever You will, after closeness.

I swear: but for his generosity and fidelity,

I would have shaken hands with my sword and embraced my spearpoint.
