against every throat in armor, or every heart.

When a man's weapon leaves his hand,

he is lost, and meets a people's weapon with none of his own.

The Kurds of al-Shadhijan entrust their affairs

to a youth like the ben tree's soft, fresh branch.

    وجَدِّكَ ما اشتقَ الحرابُ من الحَرْبِ

    And in battle, 'Annaz' is derived from 'goat';

and, by your grandsire, lances were not derived from 'war'.

But shapes of bright swords and lances

return and appear among hair-partings and brows.

to darkness's covert, or has east been exchanged for west?”

he saw spearheads on the lances of Banu Ka'b,

and shafts scattered like a swarm of locusts, as though

they were Gog's licking tongues, emerging from the breach,

reinforcing young men's right hands with Khattian lances,

as they fight at close quarters after the Samharian spears.

Nothing startled him but the lightning of clouds

pouring down a torrent of spear-thrusts and blows.

And a people through whom what was lost is regained by force:

when it is easy, they pass beyond it to the hard.

Why, then, did you not hold your steed firm on the day

horsemen descended from 'the dog's hipbone' confronted you?

    وكل رَحى دارتْ تدورُ على قُطْبِ

    Noble men, upon whom the millstone of Qays turns;

and every turning millstone revolves upon an axle.

I thought the lance-thrusts of the illustrious house of Muqallad

were Banu Shayban's charges in pursuit of plunder.

And deluding aggression made you tread upon a live coal,

before which you recoiled on your heels on the day of battle.

And a tribe's assembled host—whoever targets it with his schemes

will find his death nearer to him than terror.

So tell him, you two—may God not grant his judgment success—

when have the non-Arab Kurds stood firm against the Arabs?
