Let my form fade and appear in love.

Do not reproach me: ardent longing excuses me.

For the one you have burdened with your blame

Is a youth whose back is laden with time's misfortunes.

You censure among yourselves every deed you have done,

Except baseness, which among you is acquired and praised.

If you drain the water of my eyelids, it was only

For you that I called for tears and stored them.

May God water a land whose name I do not disclose,

Lest my sorrows for it be known when it is named.

Except that its soil is musky, and its breeze

Delights and grows dewy while the noonday heats pant.

There I enjoyed bliss, his cups displayed to me by

One with gleaming front teeth, a radiant neck, and dark eyes.

By God, I cannot tell whether it was wine

Gathered from the vine or pressed from the sun.

When the wing of darkness pours it out and drinks it deep,

You see night's mantle folded and spread out.

Friend, look closely: do you see today what I see?

You see strife whose fires are blazing.

    نهيتُكَ عن خُلْقي وأنتَ مُخيَّرُ

    Do not befriend al-Samsam if you are my companion;

I have warned you against my own disposition; the choice is yours.

You will know, if you test me in striking,

And test him, which of the two blades gives greater aid.

The one who pays your blood-money in young camels,

His spear-shaft red from your lord's throat,

    فهلْ أنتَ بالضيمِ المحاولِ تَشْعُرُ

    Imposes on you a course with humiliation gleaming behind it;

Are you aware of the humiliation being contrived?

Every people now mends its own broken one,

But the fracture from my neighbor's stumble goes unmended.

His grazing herd spends the night in untroubled repose,

While mine passed the night terrified by spearheads.

Had I fastened my ropes to Ubayd Allah,

The hard-tempered Mashrafi sword would have twisted their strands tight.

Had I brought my adversary to judgment before him,

A judge whose judgment cannot be changed would have ruled for me.

But I only kept night company with vain dreams,

And lived beside a drowsy man who sleeps while I stay awake.

He pondered when I came crying to him for aid,

But one who ponders does not rescue a despoiled man.

He saw glory between the two armies as a prize

For whoever enters the spear-fight and stands firm.

    تسربلُ ثوبَ الذُّلِ من لا يُغَرّرُ

    Yet he would not venture into danger in pursuit of eminence;

Whoever takes no risks has donned the robe of abasement.

Who will not gird himself when an opportunity is within reach.

    Then ponders as it retreats.

But you proved slave women driving caravans onward.

And met from you worse than what I feared.

Was one of the things I had chosen.

I said to you, 'Return your neighbor's driven-off livestock,'

But you could not—you are more capable of baseness.

Granted that you disdain noble conduct for its own sake,

Did you not know that tales are handed down?

A vigilant man will preserve what you neglected,

Who shines and brings light when the age grows black.

    وكيفَ يَغيبُ العِزُّ والسيفُ يَحضُرُ

    When they threaten him with abasement, he glances at his sword;

How can honor be absent while the sword is present?

You used to conceal your grudges from him,

But those grudges have now begun to show.

    ومن تحتِه كان المُبَخْتِرُ يَحفِرُ

    Through them you sought the greatest calamity, and it struck your own heads;

And beneath him the swaggerer had been digging.

What misled you about a valiant man whose charges strike true,

Who keeps strutting toward his enemies?

Put the rings of fine mail over your hearts,

For the eyes of the Samhari spears are watching.

Do not trust the hero's mouth, for he

Laughs before your eyes while roaring.

O ruler of rulers, you gave them free rein

Through your forbearance, until they confronted you and came into the open.

They came to you brandishing cutting swords and spears,

And returned with those weapons splintering and breaking within them.

The Samhari spears have left in them

Wounds probed with spears of the same kind.

    فرَبُّ الأيادي مَنْ يُقيلُ ويغفِرُ

    Pardon their foolish judgment and forgive their sins;

For the master of favors is he who pardons and forgives.

Your wrath is death to sinners,

And your pardon shelters and protects them from it.

I see trees whose boughs promise has brought into leaf,

And you will make them fruitful, if God grants safety.

Someone other than you exhausted hope while the affair was advancing,

And soothed with honors while the affair was declining.

But I will not deny glory its due:

Your station in great crises is higher and greater.

It has placed you upon the highest summits, and placed them

In the depths of the earth; God sees people best.

A cloud from your two palms has never ceased

To cover my land, whose growth is forever green.

By God, I will not forget a hand of yours; only

He who recollects loses track of a thing and forgets it.

A hand whose bounty I gained however I beckoned,

In it are riches for the seeker of gifts and cause for pride.

    وما كنتُ من فرطِ المذلةِ أبصُرُ

    You cleared away the mote until my eye could look closely;

I could not see for the extremity of abasement.

You banished my sickness while my sigh

Tore my soul apart, with women visiting my sickbed gathered round.

On the evening the physician consoled me and told me,

'Your remedy is unavailable, and your wound will not heal.'

Convey a message to the Commander of the Faithful,

For every messenger but you falls short.

Do you grant my home to a Kharijite whose tongue

Is for you, but whose heart is against you when he turns away?

How, though we have committed no offense, is their staff protected,

While ours is whittled and stripped by your hands?

Do not leave it as a pretext for a man who pledges allegiance,

To betray through it in dispute and act treacherously.

If obtaining justice for me has proved difficult with you,

Then coming to death is not difficult.

Is there not a cutting sword whose blade the smith has honed?

Is there not a straight spear with a spearhead set in command?
