أمَاis there no رائِعٌterror ينتابُنيvisits me repeatedly فيروعُand so terrifies
منfrom الدّهْرِTime إلاexcept ماwhat تقولُshe says ولوعُan ardent woman
Is there no terror that visits and alarms me
from Time, save what an ardent woman says?
يقولُit says ألاwill you not تبغيseek الغِنىwealth بمذلةٍthrough abasement
وماand not الفقْرُpoverty إلاexcept ذلَةٌabasement وخُشوعُand submission
It says, “Will you not seek wealth through abasement?
And poverty is nothing but abasement and submission.”
رأتْshe saw أمَلاًa hope بيضُbright blades الصّوارِمِof the keen swords دونَهbefore it

She saw a hope, before which the bright, keen swords
prostrate themselves upon our heads and bow.
فإنّfor indeed لَناwe have فيamid حادثِcalamity الدّهرِof Time همّةًa resolve
ستترُكهwill leave it شتّىscattered ونحْنُwhile we جَميعُare united
For amid Time's calamities we have a resolve
that will leave it scattered, while we remain united.

And were it not for avoiding humiliation, its calamities
would sometimes obey our wishes, and we would obey them.
إذاًthen لعشِقْناwe would surely love فيin الزّمانِthis life سيوفَناour swords

Then we would have loved our swords in this life,
but among lovers there is submission.

By my life, al-Husam ibn Taghlib was indeed
a youth whose dwelling was springtime for those seeking gifts.

And I had thought that, if parting came in earnest,
neither eye nor tears would remain to me.

But when their camels rose for departure,
I smiled, save for what my ribs concealed.

ونبهتُand I roused صَبريmy patience والغَرامُwhile passion ضَجيعُwas a bedfellow
I mastered my tears, though my eyelids brimmed,
and roused my patience, while passion was my bedfellow.

We left Shaddad ibn Ni'ma his provisions
that evening, as he fed his guest and went hungry,

for fear that a guest after us might reproach him
and blunt the sword's edge, keen-cutting though it is.

I called Ali to noble deeds, which were not rebuffed,
and to glory, whose sanctuary no mighty one barred.

And what a youth I roused! He answered me
with “At your service!” while the wakeful slept.

They close their eyelids to my plight, though each of them
sees my plight and could hear, if he wished.

And God has a hidden treasure in Ibn al-Marzuban
that will alarm the kings of mankind and terrify them.

A youth whose only ambition is praising you,
and every noble man is eager for praise.

An enemy to his own sleep, his night is like his day;
toward glory, unbridled and unrestrained.

He abstains from limpid water out of scruple,
though within him are parching thirst and longing.

May God curse any gain in the pursuit of which
a tongue is quick to assail a noble man's honor!

If what suffices a man is what restrains him,
then life's most useful thing is contentment.

He helps his brother through adversity in person,
when a watering place appears and drinkers come into view.

May kings be your ransom, whose withholding and barriers
are swords and shields over their wealth.

They preserved it as a reserve for their lives,
yet they have not preserved it, while their lives are lost.

As though terrors had not frightened us, nor swept away
our fathers among the dead in fatal falls.

Roots of mortality have departed; we are their branches,
and we are roots, and sons are branches.

So may I never live in an age whose people's hope
asks the giver of praise how he sells it.

Let the eminent among the people receive all your aid,
and there is no harm if a lowly man receives your bounty.
كفيتُكَI spared you فيin الدُنْياthis world ملامةَreproaching صاحبٍa companion
يُسِرُّwho conceals يداًa favor أسدَيتَهاyou bestowed it فتَشيعُand it becomes known
I have spared you, in this world, the need to reproach a companion
who conceals a favor you bestowed, only for it to become known.

He is censured by one whose praise adds nothing to you,
and whoever hides a favor is one who reveals it.

And my belief that I have brought you a poem of praise
matching what you gave me is truly astonishing.
جنيتُI committed بتقصيريthrough my shortcomings عليكَagainst you جِنايَةًan offense
وأنتَyet you لمنْfor whoever يَجنoffends عليكَagainst you شَفيعُare an intercessor

Through my shortcomings I have committed an offense against you,
yet you intercede for whoever wrongs you.

ولاnor أتَوقّىdo I guard against الخَطْبَcalamity وهوَthough it فَظيعُis dreadful
So I swore not to hope for rain, though it smiles,
nor guard against calamity, though it is dreadful.

وماand not النّاسُpeople إلاّexcept آخِذٌa taker ومَنوعُand a withholder

Shall I place hope in anyone but you to meet a need,
when people are nothing but takers and withholders?

And could a calamity frighten me, when hope in you stands before it,
so that I quail before it? I would indeed be fainthearted.

The turns of Time saw me returning toward you,
so back upon their heels they turn.

And may you never cease to campaign, driven by your ambitions, amid blades
that flash while men's heads fall.
