اذا لم تُعَدِلْ قِسمةَ الزادِ بيننا

اذا لم تُعَدِلْ قِسمةَ الزادِ بيننا

أَضعتَ ولا يَرعى الحِفاظَ المُضَيَّعُ

أَضعتَ ولا يَرعى الحِفاظَ المُضَيَّعُ

If you do not divide the provisions justly between us,

If you do not divide the provisions fairly among us,

you have squandered—and no squanderer keeps faith.

You have neglected us; the neglected do not keep faith.

وان أَنتَ لم تَحمِ العيالَ مِنَ الطوى

وان أَنتَ لم تَحمِ العيالَ مِنَ الطوى

اذا أَمنوا لم يَحمهم حِينَ تَفْزَعُ

اذا أَمنوا لم يَحمهم حِينَ تَفْزَعُ

And if you do not sustain the dependents against starvation,

And if you do not protect the dependents from hunger

once they feel safe, they will not be protected when you take fright.

When they are safe, he will not protect them when you take fright.

هَبِ الوَرْدَ لم يُخلقْ ليومِ كريهةٍ

هَبِ الوَرْدَ لم يُخلقْ ليومِ كريهةٍ

أما كنْتَ تعصى بالحُسام وتَمنَعُ

أما كنْتَ تعصى بالحُسام وتَمنَعُ

Suppose al-Ward, the steed, had not been created for the day of battle—

Suppose the bay horse was not created for a day of battle:

would you not still give and withhold by the sword?

Could you not have resisted with the keen sword and defended?

وباللهِ ما يُغني فتيلاً اذا دَعَوا

وباللهِ ما يُغني فتيلاً اذا دَعَوا

بَراكاء الاَّ أَنْ يَفِرَّ المُرَوَّعُ

بَراكاء الاَّ أَنْ يَفِرَّ المُرَوَّعُ

By God, nothing avails a whit when they raise the cry

And by God, it avails not a whit when they cry

“Hold!”—save for the terror-stricken man to flee.

“Kneel for battle!”—save that the terrified man may flee.
