If separation comes from excessive weariness,
If separation is due to boredom with routine
then separation is kinder to me than your forgetting.
My determination is more compassionate in conduct

And what young man, before love and after it,
And which youth before or after falling in love
has wished for what he fears and dreads?
Wishes for what he fears and is cautious of

I never thought that yearning, distance, and weeping,
Neither my longing, remoteness, nor weeping cease
and the loss of sleep, were things I savor and adore.
Nor the loss of a loved one however pleasant and beloved

I fail while an incapable finds success
and the aided, fortunate man never lacks success.
Perseverance never lacks triumph and blessings

And a peerless youth who alone holds himself aloof—
Among the youth is one who disdains
both we and he are maddened by pride's fierce surge.
Me and him from the Chapter of Might first I recite

I conceal and reveal my passion on the day of his farewell,
I conceal and reveal my passion the day of his farewell
as though a captive bound for the fatal stroke.
As if I am a prisoner bound by tax I abide

He deems patience more fitting for a young man, and obeys it,
He sees patience more becoming so he obeys it
yet love of life overtakes him, and he grows anxious.
And the love of life urges him so he is restless

With fanciful ambitions make me a fool

As if I called upon the wolf in Nejd for a ewe
whose carcass he fed upon yesterday, and it lies torn apart.
That yesterday grazed its outskirts so it was torn

I question him when quarry crosses his path,
I ask about it when a gazelle rivaled it
and he rushes headlong along its tracks.
So it passed by its tracks oozing

Every longing lover who voices his grief has found solace,
Every lover laments his burning passion
but concealment has not consoled me, though prudence is more fitting.
But silence and resolve did not suit me

If only praise of Damascus’ land

Would inspire people’s minds and treat gently

I detect in its eyelids the tattoos of sorrow
I called to him while the night was horned with dawn.
I stay up with it as night turns to dawn unfazed

That vigor which I had has betrayed me

Woe to it, if it cleared at the peak

A prowling wolf envied it, circulating
telling of things unseen, and speaking truly.
Informing about the unseen, and he speaks true

How different are an arrow whose point lies in the ribs
Far apart is an arrow piercing the heart
and another that shoots through the scorching winds!
And another brushing the sides of limbs and darting

Indeed, he overcame his enemies in resolve and strength—
He surely defeated enemies with wisdom and strength
a taciturn man, head bowed throughout long-held rancor.
Silent about the length of resentment contemplating

They plumbed the depths of what you seek,
They plumbed the depth you seek
but did not reach it—how far away! Your depth is deeper.
Alas! Your depth is far deeper

Have you not seen me gain praise while at ease?
Do you not see me gain praise while professing
Not everyone who seeks praise as sustenance is granted it.
Though not all who seek praise will be granted?

I turn away from provisions that delight,
I avoid gifts that are flashy
and the glittering cloud does not entice me.
And the chance encounter does not please me

And though I have not been deprived of all honor,
Though I never lacked glory entirely
I surely know that life beside you is more fitting.
I know living with you is far more favorable

وقد يُنصَرُ الجدُّ الحَرُونُ فيلْحَقُ
May the turns of days bring us together;
Perhaps later days will unite us
sometimes balking fortune is helped, and catches up.
And the River Herun will join its waters
