غَدا خَلِقاً عنْدي جديدُ المصائِبِ
If calamities do not frighten me, it is because so often
If disasters did not keep me preoccupied,
New misfortunes have grown threadbare to me.
Then every morning brought me new calamities.

For a time they assailed me with strange happenings,
It confronted me with strange things for a while,
Yet I encountered nothing I had not experienced.
Yet I encountered nothing that was not in my trials.

So, O my two companions, of Hilal ibn Amir
So, O my companion, Hilal son of Amer,
And Sa'd ibn Zayd, on the summits and crests,
And Saad son of Zayd in the earth and the vast plains.

على طلَلٍ بينَ العُذَيْبِ فَراسِبِ
You marveled that the pale camels exhausted their tears
You both wondered that I lamented her ruin
Over a ruined campsite between al-'Udhayb and Rasib.
At the remnants between al-Udhayb and stopped camels.
فَلاso do not تحسَباyou two suppose أنّthat المَطاياthe mounts عَرفْنَهthey recognized it

So do not suppose the mounts recognized it;
Do not think the eye knew it,
For those are my tears in the eyes of the riding camels.
These are my tears in the eyes of the riders.

My yearning showed them how to feel love;
My yearning, I see how it feels passionate love,
Their pillars are a flood of streaming tears.
Its pillars are the flowing of pouring tears.

When you shake the illustrious house of Nubata,
If you shake the myrrh tree, fragrance comes out,
You shake the blades of keen, cleaving swords.
You shake the tall, slender date palms.
ألاcome now نادِcall out فيamong الأحْياءِthe tribes هلْis there مِنany مُفاخرٍrival in glory
ألا نادِ في الأحْياءِ هلْ مِن مُفاخرٍ

يفاخِرُنا في الناسِ أن مِن مُحارِبِ
Come, call among the tribes: is there any rival in glory
Call out among the living, is there anyone who boasts?
Who vies with us among the people, boasting he is of Muharib?
That he takes pride among people that he is a warrior.

أباعدَنا في الجدْبِ قبل الأقارِبِ
And we are the sons of Sa'd; our serving bowls visit
While we are the clan of Saad, our empty stomachs grumble,
Those distant from us in drought before our kin.
Hunger distanced us before our relatives.

When the dire drought-year kneels among a people,
When a great year camped at a people,
We make our camels kneel beside them with largesse and prized gifts.
We inclined to them with prayers and wants.

When our fires and the winds about them wrestle,
When our fires blazed and their winds,
And no fire remains to shine for a seeker,
And no fire remained lit for its keeper.

We raise up for it our wealth and fine steeds,
We offered our wealth, steeds and garments
And our garments, until it brings someone hungry.
Until it comes with a downpour.

We settled in an abode among the seven heavens,
We descended from the seventh heaven,
Where we set our feet above the stars.
And placed our feet atop the stars.
