تنفّستُI sighed محزوناًsorrowful وليسand is not تَنفُّسيmy sighing
علىover مَطعمfood منfrom الحياةِlife ومَلبَسِand clothing
I sighed in sorrow, yet my sighing was not
for food or clothing in this life,
سِوىexcept أنّthat ماليmy wealth عاذِرٌfalling short عنof خليقَتيmy nature
وأنّيand that I علىdespite الأقْتارِpoverty أُعطيgive وأنتَسيand take on debt
but because my means fall short of my nature,
and because, despite poverty, I give and take on debt.
فياso, oh رُبَّmany a ماءٍwatering place قدindeed ذَعَرْتُI startled وحوشَهُits wild beasts
وأطيارَهُand its birds والصبحُwhile dawn لمhad not yet يَتَنفّسِbreathed
At many a watering place I have startled its wild beasts
and its birds, before the dawn had breathed,
بحرفٍon a lean she-camel إذاwhen حنّتْshe moans أقولُI say لهاto her قِرىbe still
بُغامُكِyour lowing تغريديmy song وظهركِand your back مَجلِسيmy seat
on a lean she-camel; when she moans, I tell her, 'Be still:
your lowing is my song, and your back my seat.'
فإنّيfor I وصُحبىand my companions بالثّنيّةِat the mountain pass أنْif سَرَوْاthey traveled by night
سَرَيتُI traveled by night بهمwith them أوor عَرّسواthey halted for sleep لمdid not أُعَرِّسِI halt for sleep
For, with my companions at the pass, if they travel by night,
I travel with them; or, if they halt to sleep, I do not halt.
إذاwhen اتّسعتْgrew wide أرضٌa land وضاقتْand grew strait مَعيشضةٌlivelihood
لبستُI donned ثيابَgarments الفاتكِthe marauder المُتَغطْرسِthe haughty one
When the land is wide but livelihood is strait,
I don the garb of the haughty marauder.
فَياso, oh ليتَif only شعرَknowledge الأروعِthe gallant one ابنِson of نُباتَةٍNubata
بأيِّwith which صروفِvicissitudes الدّهْرِof fate لمhas not يتمرسِgrappled
Oh, would that the gallant Ibn Nubata knew
which of fate's reversals he has not wrestled with!
أفيis there in كلِّevery يومٍday عثرةٌa stumble بعدafter عثرةٍa stumble
يكرِّرُhe repeats فيهاin it نظرةَthe gaze المُتفرسِof the discerning observer
Must each day bring stumble after stumble,
at which he looks again with a discerning eye?
هلis it العيشُlife إلاbut نِقمةٌan affliction أثرَfollowing نِعْمَةa blessing
أوor العُمْرُa lifetime إلاّbut مَقْطَفٌa harvest أثرَfollowing مَغْرَسِa planting
Is life anything but affliction following a blessing,
or a lifetime but a harvest following a planting?
أتانيcame to me حديثٌa message منكَfrom you أوحشَdismayed حاسداًan envious man
كنوداًungrateful وباتَand became at night الليلُthe night خِلّيmy close friend ومؤنِسيand my comforting companion
Word from you reached me, dismaying an envious man,
a thankless one; and night became my friend and comforter.

For what service of mine did you bestow your favor on me?
May the chiefs of Tamim ransom you with their lives!
وراحتْand came عليكَto you المكرُماتُnoble deeds وروّحتْand brought ease
بكلِّthrough every طليقِcheerful الوجهِof face لمhas not يتعبَّسِfrowned
May noble deeds come to you and bring you ease,
through every cheerful-faced man who has never frowned.
فماfor no حازمٌprudent man قدindeed قَوّمَstraightened الدّهرُtime ميلَهُhis crookedness
إذاif لمnot يقوِّمْhe sets straight جانبيهِboth his flanks بكيِّسِwith a shrewd man
For no man whom time has set straight is prudent
unless he braces both flanks with a shrewd man.
