والليلَand the night والقمرَand the moon المنيرَshining رسَائِليmy letters
I shall entrust the shining sun and the morning light
I will load the radiant sun, the bright dawn,
And the night and the shining moon with my letters.
The night, and the radiant moon with my messages.
ماwhat بالis the matter with سيفSayf (Sword) الدولةِal-Dawla (of the State) الملكِthe king اغتدىhas come to be
وهوthough he الوسيلةُthe means لىfor me يردُّrejects وسائِليmy intermediaries
Why has Sayf al-Dawla, the king, come to
Why has the sword of the state, the king, transgressed?
Reject my intermediaries, though he is my recourse?
He is my conduit to return my pleadings.
قكأَننىas though I (apparent typo) قلتُI said الكواكبُthe stars مثلهlike him
أَوor قلتI said انَّthat الرزقَsustenance ليسَis not بجاهِلِat all ignorant
As though I had said the stars were his equal,
As if I said the planets are like him,
Or said that sustenance is not ignorant.
Or said sustenance is not ignorant.
