سَريتُI traveled by night علىon ظهرِthe back of الأقَبِّthe slender-waisted steed مُشَمِّراًgirded up
سَريتُ على ظهرِ الأقَبِّ مُشَمِّراً
أقودُI lead بهِwith it الظلماءَthe darkness وهيwhile it is حَرونُrefusing to move
أقودُ بهِ الظلماءَ وهي حَرونُ
I rode by night on the slender-waisted steed’s back, girded up;
I strode upon the back of darkness, prepared,
With it I lead the darkness, though it balks.
Leading it while it burned hot,
كأنّas though الدُجىthe darkness منّيof me تخافُfears وتتقيand guards itself
كأنّ الدُجى منّي تخافُ وتتقي
فكلُّso all هواديهِits forerunners عليَّupon me عُيونُeyes
فكلُّ هواديهِ عليَّ عُيونُ
As though the darkness fears me and guards against me,
As if the gloom feared me and fled,
So all its forerunners are eyes upon me.
For in each of its valleys were eyes upon me.
