I have found, O Samsam, that patience’s least

    Virtues are magnanimity and fidelity.

So take your ample share of it,

And leave grief for women to befriend.

    فلا بؤسٌ يدُوم ولا رَخَاءُ

    The nights have run their customary course;

So neither misery nor prosperity endures.

Take comfort, for before your father’s day,

The nights’ calamities struck down kings—though none was his equal.

And when swords glanced off and grew blunt, you would

Press on; resolve is in your nature.

And if the hand of the nights has folded him away,

Then morning is folded away by evening.
