ولاnor ضنيناًa miser باللهاwith gifts مالَهْhis wealth
I do not question the dwelling-site and its ruins,
I do not ask of the ruins or their quarter
nor ask a miser, grudging with gifts, for his wealth.
Nor one who is stingy with what he possesses
أَرفعُI raise همىmy ambition وأَصونand I safeguard المُنىhopes
عنfrom طمعٍgreed أَنفُضُI shake out غِربالَهْits sieve
I raise my ambition and safeguard my hopes
I raise my worries and protect my wishes
from greed whose sieve I shake out.
From greed, shaking off its sieves
فماso not أُرىI am seen الاَّexcept علىat موردٍa watering place
أُناجِذُI grapple with المجدَglory وأَشغالَهْand its labors
So I am seen only at a watering place,
So I do not see except at a watering hole
grappling with glory and its labors.
Where I glory in honor and its burdens

It is as though my camel-saddle and its girths
As if my urns and their capacities
were cast upon a snub-nosed, long-tailed wild cow,
Were poured upon a noble lady's train
أَوor ناشطa roaming wild bull ضَمَّتْgathered الىinto حوزهِhis refuge

or a roaming wild bull, into whose refuge
Or an active man whose surroundings
Gemini's scorching winds have driven his flanks.
Were grasped by the talons of a daring hawk

يُراصدُhe watches الليلَthe night وأهْوالَهْand its terrors
Then he stayed on firm high ground, at a lookout,
So he remained steadfast on a high ground
watching the night and its terrors,
Keeping watch of the night and its horrors

So that he may shoot at it with his writ
like matching arrow-shafts and a wild-lote bough.
Like the twang of arrows and strays

فيin الماءِthe water انto يقنصَcapture تمثالَهْhis reflection
Whoever keeps company with this world is hoping
Whoever desires the world remains greedy
to catch his own reflection in water.
That he may sculpture its image in water

لاnot يملِكcan hold الجفنُthe eyelid لهاfor it حَالَهْa state
Its outpouring is like loose sand;
Like the sands of barren deserts, sustained by them
no eye can hold it in a single state.
The eyelid cannot control its state
تُميتُit kills بالزادwith sustenance وتُحييand gives life بهthrough it
فهيso it is علىagainst الأَنفسِsouls مُحتالَهْscheming
It kills with sustenance and gives life through it;
It kills with provision and revives thereby
so it schemes against souls.
Thus it is deceptive to souls

واستقبلand took up anew العاملُthe worker أَعمالَهْhis labors
Time's course has changed its substitutes,
The cycle of fate has changed its phases
and the worker has taken up his labors anew.
And the worker has undertaken his deeds

اِذْwhen صُرِفَتْwas diverted عنfrom وجههاits course الحالَهْthe condition
A young man recoils from it in a certain condition,
So the youth may deduce from it in a condition
when that condition is diverted from its course.
When its aspects are averted from his face

So at times he drinks its murky waters,
Thus he drinks its bitterness at times
and at times he drinks its sweet, flowing water.
And at others he drinks its chains

Here is Hilal, after he was struck
This crescent after it was overwhelmed
by the calamities of time that struck him.
By the events of fate that overwhelmed it

He now fashions his arrows for his foes;
It came to dawn, unleashing its arrows at the enemy
God has set his affairs in order.
God has gathered its afflictions for it

And the closely interlinked coat of mail has become
And the coat of mail that was worn
his tunic, after his garb of leather thongs.
Became after clothes, its cloak

So say to this man, wondrous in his pardon:
So say to the originator in his pardon
Blessed is your captive—blessed is he!
Good fortune to your prisoner, good fortune to him

From him you have unleashed a ravening lion,
You have tamed from it a vicious lion
who has accustomed his cubs to chewing flesh.
Who was used to chewing on meat and its cubs

Proud-necked, in his strength he does not fear
A hunter whom the severity of his might
time's brutalities and its terrors.
Does not frighten the upheavals of fate and its burdens

Hurl him, if a deadly calamity comes by night,
So unleash it if a feast is prepared
against the fields of terror and its champions,
The feelings of awe and its heroes

And every vilifier inclined to sedition
who has tucked up his skirts for the leap.
Has rolled up the train of his garment for the pounce

Perhaps, if his dwelling grows distant,
Perhaps if his abode was shaken
and the cords become his appointed ends,
And the ropes became his appointed time

in an intoxication that stretches out his hopes,
In intoxication spreading out its hopes

he will remember hardship and what befell him,
That he may recall the effort and what he attained
and give thanks for the bounty that reached him.
So he thanks the length that was extended to him

Fakhr al-Mulk went to excess in his generosity,
The pride of the kingdom was excessive in his munificence
until people shrank from his bounty.
Until people were perplexed by his favors

The cairn-marked hills tremble before him,
For him the sturdy abodes tremble
where terror has unleashed its own earthquake.
Fear quakes through them in its tremors

The earth, throughout its expanses, could scarcely
The lands in their regions could hardly
bear it, though the earth is a mighty bearer.
Bear them, and the earth is its burdener

terrified the champions, but did not terrify him,
That stunned the chiefs and did not stun him

When the king became angry and his

Ferocity stirred with the needle and its sewings

People found no way through its grave dilemma,
People cannot be guided to its imbalance
and evil had made its locks inscrutable.
And evil has obscured its locks

With his judgment, Abu Ghalib struck precisely
Abu Ghalib matched the joints of the matter and its limbs
at the affair's joints and articulations.

When a sovereign's birds are driven for augury,
His surname becomes his omen
his byname is his good omen.

He does not surrender his neighbor to what has dragged him down,
And the dunes do not spare their burrows
and the mountain does not surrender its ibex.

Rejoicing in good when he attains it
he rejoices in good fortune when it reaches him.

Flowed down his cheek
the crimson hue of Hawwarin's choice wine.

From the full moon's face he has a gleam,
And the rising of the sun is his halo
and the rising sun is his halo.

He is nobly descended on every side, in a lineage
Where his uncle meets his maternal uncle
where his paternal uncle rivals his maternal uncle.

God has never created a young man like him;
Alas, He will not create the like of him
how remote the prospect of His creating his equals!
