I am yours, the one who granted you full victory,

and tore the garments of sickness off you.

For the faith's two edges cut keenly,

and it remains safe if you escape death.

There is no prosperity in life after you,

nor any abiding in the abode after you.

And can illness find any lodging with you,

when one may recover even from incurable illness?

Peace—and peace is the least thing

I send to the people of peace.

Indeed, your eyelids slept, not through heedlessness,

but my gratitude does not sleep among sleepers.

You fulfilled my wishes with generosity and deeds,

while before you I was rewarded with words.

    ومَن لكَ في العطاءِ بمُسْتَهامِ

    I became enamored of a bounty you lavished without measure;

and who is as passionately enamored of giving as you?

And your lightning's flash spread far through the night,

heralding your immense bounties to me.

Hopes my sitting still does not keep distant,

nor does my rising to seek them bring them near.

They are the rain-stars, tireless in dispensing gifts,

though human endeavor has not toiled for them.

Without recompense to reward you—and indeed I...

And you seek no reward from the Imam.

You unveiled his rule as a bride,

though you had donned the tunics of dust.

Dhu'ala, the wolf, cleft its gloom, then met

dawn's right hand in the haunch of darkness.

And it had been—its mainstay a great multitude—

mere saddle-threads, its halter flailing wildly.

You surpassed every utterance in eloquence,

and taught every archer to hit the mark.

How many stars of night are in your keeping,

gathered by you, once scattered, into a string:

as reproach, or love-poetry, or praise,

for a friend, a beloved, or a noble lord.

Through them, minds gain understanding and sobriety,

though they have acted on them as wine does.

They gallop in the arena of the ears,

toward the hearts' cores, without reserve.

I did not single you out for praise until

I had tested the people of Ham and Shem.

And I severed and renewed ties with passion, until

for union with it I forsook the phantom of dreams.

I never loved a youth among men without

grasping forgetfulness of him with passion's hand,

except you: your generosity nurtured my flesh

and set marrow flowing again through my bones.

Does Taghlib feel safe from the outcries of my words?

And beyond speech there is only the keen-edged sword.

Ah, would that I had not guarded my honor,

nor found the company of the base repugnant!

Perhaps fate will favor me with good fortune,

by which I may turn back the unruly steed without a bridle.

Let suspicions fall short of my rightful due,

and leave no room for dispute.

And relieve it, for you have become a refuge

for it, O dispeller of mighty distresses.
