He gained from beauty whatever he chose,

Then bestowed on the fair ones what he left behind.

My eyelid savors its tears for him,

As though it had shed them from his saliva.

Had my heart been with me, I would have found solace in it,

But it is with the most unjust of kings.

O you whose paths to the heights of

Eminence and glory have become yours alone,

You charged me to attain your far-off goal—and who

Seeks a noble steed's effortless pace on a common mare?

And to cross a far-flung wilderness among your abodes,

Where al-Sulayk and al-Sulakah lose their way.

If I say I attain the reach of them both,

Then I say that stillness is like motion.
