Can it be that sorrow has no relief,

or that the night has no morning?

    O Sa'd of success, O Sa'd of triumph,

    O Sa'd of spears, O Sa'd of blades!

Do the non-Arabs graze upon your souls,

while you are made to graze upon the dust of the valleys?

    غَدّوا أوائِلَها للرِّماحْ

    Then march against them with a massed host;

nourish its vanguard for the spears.

Their ranks are scattered across the lands,

and it gathers them for their allotted doom.

    For all Mudar has learned

that we are the primary feathers of that wing,

and that, when the horses bolt with us,

there is no retreat for our feet.

So what ails me, that I do not hear the mourning women

    satisfying me with hideous cries?

There I swagger among the horses,

and depart amid the breasts of spears.

So, O Ibn Nubata, you are no rescuer

unless you visit them with unalloyed evil.

For war surely knows, on the day of encounter,

that you are its weapon of weapons.

And, my reproachers for what I have given—

    indeed, reproach is generosity's twin.
