Your steeds have yearned to see it
with towering spears enfolding their breasts,
Wrapped around in fine coats of mail

complete in flank and every quarter,
With fully armed flanks and sides
and the marks of spear-thrusts upon them are scabs.
And the traces of spears on them exalted

I disdained their engaging in anything but a war
I refused that they engage other than in war
where their share is the army's massed ranks.
So their share of the dense army would be plentiful

There the Samhari lance's point is lowly,
The Indian swords in it are disgraced
and the Mashrafi sword's breast is noble.
And the chests of the honorable in it are esteemed

The swords joined forces against its lances,
The swords have collaborated against its spear
so the lances' escape from them is a rarity.
Yet the escape of the spear from them is swift

For anyone but you, the wildernesses are no home,
The wastelands compared to you are no abode
nor are long night marches ease and abundance.
Nor are long journeys leisure and countryside

If you desire the fierce strike
and thrusts to which death responds,
And a stab that the breastplates respond to

Then besiege it with the tongues or you will see it
with the blood of throats dripping upon them.
And treat it from the water of throats, however you wish

For it is but a battle that clears away,
It is nothing but a battle wherein

The Roman swords were made to shine

and ranks are threaded upon your slender spears.
And lines up in your regiments

Had Time grown gentle, you would have grown gentle within it;
If time were to be fair
both of us have a harsh disposition.
We and the fierce people would be equal in it

It wrongs me wherever I dwell within it,
It is unjust to me wherever I reside in it
but under your protection it does not wrong me.
But in your vicinity no injustice occurs

One far from you receives your bounty;
Whoever turns away from you attains your bestowal
so how could guests be neglected with you?
So how can strangers lose out near you?
