Ah, how lovely the pleasure of evening wine,

and a garment of delicate living,

On a pebbled flat with brimming pools, where evening finds

    the trees with spreading roots.

And every garden is displayed like jewelry

against the hues of late afternoon and sunrise.

And a running stream, where the sun's eye

finds a polish of dazzling brilliance.

I touch, through cloth or directly beneath my cloak,

soil like musk, the color of saffron perfume.

When the morning brightens, I am awakened

by a south wind whose touch is a brother's touch.

    حديثُهم ألذُّ من الرّحيقِ

    And young men who take my cares to heart;

their conversation is sweeter than pure wine.

And while I am in the dwellings of Banu Tamim,

ailing, kept from the sight of a friend.

Thus—and how lovely the passage of rhymes,

heading straight, not swerving from the road.

I prepare them to praise Abu Shujaʿ,

but they fall short or struggle in a narrow pass.

I hope my praise may attain your heights—

but can a gleam of lightning be caught?

And how can the Pleiades' forelock be reached

by fingers that even a vulture's eggs elude?

    حَنانَكَ لو حَمَلْتَ على مُطيقِ

    You have indeed burdened me with a heavy load;

mercy! If only you had laid it on someone able to bear it.

May you live on, and may the nights never borrow from you

the robe of gladness of a beautiful life.

And may every year pass as you wish,

blessed in fortune, eager in pursuit and swift to overtake,

with the bright brow of a white night that bends

its neck toward a smiling day.

How often your hand has done for a morning caller

what water does for a leafy bough!

And many a distressed man called on you, and you were to him

what life is to a drowning man's soul.

    وآخرَ كدَّ بِرَّكَ بالعقوقِ

    You sought gratitude from him, but it turned to ingratitude;

and another taxed your kindness with disloyalty.

Yet you never cease to patch every rent

with your gentleness in safeguarding rights.

Your forbearance overpowers men—it is itself might—

as does your lowered gaze, though yours is a watchful eye.

And beneath your pardoning of slips lies an edge

that blunts the cutting edges of the keen sword.

And a resolve beyond the reach of imagination,

and in pursuing it one enters a deep ravine.
