    Woe to me from the angry one who turns away, when the

    tale-bearer conveyed to him a tale that was wholly false.

    لي مِنهُ وجدان مَمدودٌ وَمَقصورُ

    His temple-lock is cropped, his tress hangs loose;

    from him I have two longings: one prolonged, one cut short.

    I greeted him; he turned aside, tightening his eyebrow's bow,

    as though I were a cup of wine and he were hungover.

    In him are varied charms that have bewitched me,

    and everyone captivated by beauty is excused.

    Slender is he; in my love for him, I never sought refuge with him

    without finding my passion triumphant.
