O full moon, may you neither set nor wane,

and may radiance never leave your rising-place.

What ails him afflicts faith and the world—and can

a branch sway that no trunk has held upright?

The boughs will not leaf out, nor will their sap flow,

    unless the roots intertwine.

Indeed, while you remain safe, the subjects dwell in a sanctuary

that calamity, head bowed, refrains from visiting by night.

Through justice you planted lush groves for them,

in whose gardens the eyes graze.

O lofty hill of faith, where it sought refuge

and so returned free of ambush and oppression.

Had you not protected it, departing and returning,

there would be neither Syria nor Iraq.

The pillar of faith, who has straightened its crookedness,

lives, while polytheism and hypocrisy have died.

O reviver of justice, beneath whose shade

the horizons have donned their finery.

May he whose bed was soft beneath his side ransom you,

when restlessness denied your side repose.

He for whom, with your sword's edge, you brought forth the

sweet water, while his pale camels' water was bitter brine,

swallowed poison; had you not protected him

with its edge, the antidote would have eluded him.

Kings of outlying realms, whose borders were guarded

by this resolve of yours, overtaking and outstripping.

Had you not poured away the water of the eye's slumber,

saliva would not have gone down smoothly in their mouths.

You cleaved death's surge to shield them,

    while discord cleft their livers.

I swear: if you charged them to hear

the tale of your days, they could not bear it.

When you fell ill, into their desires crept

    anxious listening and furtive eavesdropping.

They grew presumptuous—may their hopes never lack

curtailment, nor may failure ever shun them.

They imagined it deep darkness; then it lifted,

while the clear draught from their drinking-place is putrid fluid.

If indeed pain has visited a foot

whose sandal has Suha's cheek for its sole,

or has stretched its hand toward a hand

through which lifespans and livelihoods flow,

still, a blade may be overlaid with rust, while beneath it

lie a sword's keen edge and a shimmering gleam.

He shot at the cross with firm judgment, from

a curved bow whose draw was weakened by overdrawing.

And the sleep of those beyond the gulf is sleeplessness,

and life among the Franks is the agony of death.

They are dead: no whisper, no gesture,

for fear of a stealthy lion whose roar extinguishes life.

May the nights never strip from you what they clothed you in,

nor may wear and tear ever touch your freshness.
