Ah, may my father be ransom for him who came to me,

and grew weary of his own delays.

He visited, when darkness had sewn

    robes over his charms.

So, out of reverence for him, I nearly

made his hands bleed with kisses.

So I said, 'My lord, may I not kiss

something besides your hands?' He said, 'No.'

    And beauty's water flowed over

    his cheeks in bashfulness,

    وَحينَ أَحْيَا قَتَلا

    until, once he had comforted me, he left by night;

and when he had given me life, he killed me,

as a phantom of imagination brought sweetness

    to the soul, then vanished.

    Ah, how lovely that gazelle,

if only he would cure my lovesickness!

May I be ransom for him—I spend the night

afraid of him, and afraid for him.

A full moon: when the full moon is overtaken

by the dark of waning, he grows full.

A sun: when the sun goes dim

    beneath an eclipse, he blazes.

When I am gentle, he grows harsh,

and if I ask, he is stingy.

Would that the straightness of his stature

bent him toward kindness, so he would be just.

Rather, would that the expanse of his cheek

    were free of that mole.

For it is what has turned my heart

    in the molds of decay.

O you who ask me about love

and its taste, ask one who has ceased to love.

Love made me drunk, so I do not

know whether it was bitter or sweet.
