Will you not question the dwelling that does not speak?
And though it gives no answer, I shall surely question it:

How many years since then, or when were its people last here?
And will the days of youth return, and its unadorned maiden?

I saw al-Walid, son of Yazid, blessed,
Strong-shouldered in the affairs of the caliphate.

The morning his midwives called to one another, proclaiming success.

He takes little food into his belly, save a morsel to sustain him,
Of game now and then, as a falcon eats it.

Well nurtured, though some people suppose that he is
A brother of barren wastes, pale and lean of body.

Like a Yemeni sword-blade, with receding temples and a well-formed head.

Were draped over stems of basil; may his petitioner prosper!

Indeed not, though its suspension-straps are long.

You see the spiny-tailed lizard—if the lizard fears nothing else—
