Whenever I call out in fear among Qays ibn ʿAylān,
When will I call upon Qais ibn Al-Mulawwah in fear
summoning them to face danger, their horses are ridden to me,
To a fright where its horses are led towards me

رَداحٍ يُصِمُّ السّامِعينَ صَليلُها
with a massed force like a mountain, grey—a mighty host,
With a glittering sword like a bent plank
vast, whose clanging deafens those who hear it.
Whose clash deafens the listeners
