ماnot دَرىknew نَعشُهُhis bier وَلاnor حامِلوهُits bearers
ما دَرى نَعشُهُ وَلا حامِلوهُ
ماwhat عَلىupon النَعشِthe bier مِنof عَفافٍchastity وجودِand generosity
ما عَلى النَعشِ مِن عَفافٍ وجودِ
His bier did not know, nor did its bearers,
what chastity and generosity lay upon the bier.
وَأُراناand I see us كَالزَرعِlike a crop يَحصِدُهُreaps it الدَهTime (word continued)
وَأُرانا كَالزَرعِ يَحصِدُهُ الدَه
رُcompletes 'Time' فَمِنso, from بَينِbetween قائِمٍstanding وَحَصيدِand reaped
رُ فَمِن بَينِ قائِمٍ وَحَصيدِ
And I see us like a crop that Time reaps—
so some are standing, and some are reaped.
وَكَأَنّاand as though we are لِلمَوتِtoward death رَكبٌa company of riders مُخِبّوhastening (word continued)
وَكَأَنّا لِلمَوتِ رَكبٌ مُخِبّو
نَcompletes 'hastening' سِراعٌswift لِمَنهَلٍtoward a watering place مَورودِreached
نَ سِراعٌ لِمَنهَلٍ مَورودِ
And it is as though we were riders hastening toward death,
swift toward a watering place we shall reach.
