وَصاحِبٍand many a companion غَيرِno نِكسٍweakling قَدindeed نَشَأتُI roused بِهِhim
مِنfrom نَومِهِhis sleep وَهُوَwhile he فيهِin it مُمهَدٌcomfortably bedded أَنِقُcontent
And many a companion, no weakling, I have roused
From his sleep, while he lay comfortably bedded and content.
فَقُمتُso I rose أُخبِرُهُI tell him بِالغَيثِof the rain لَمnot يَرَهُhe had seen it
وَالبَرقِand the lightning إِذwhile أَناI مَحزونٌsorrowful لَهُover it أَرِقُsleepless
So I rose to tell him of rain he had not seen,
And lightning, while I was sorrowful over it and sleepless:
مُزنٌa raincloud تَسَيَّحَdrifted فيin ريحٍa wind شَآمِيَةٍfrom al-Sham
مُكَلَّلٌcrowned بِعَماءِwith cloudy masses of الماءِwater مُنتَطِقُgirdled
A raincloud drifting on a wind from al-Sham,
Crowned with cloudy masses of water, girdled round.
لَمّاwhen إِكفَهَرَّgrew dark شُرَيقِيُّthe eastern part of اللَوىal-Liwa وَأَوىand sought shelter
إِلىto تَواليهِits trailing masses مِنfrom سُفّارِّهِits wandering clouds رُفَقُbands
When the eastern part of al-Liwa darkened, and there came for shelter
To its trailing masses bands of its wandering clouds,
تَربَّصَawaited اللَيلَthe night حَتّىuntil قالَsaid شائِمُهُits cloud-watcher
عَلىon الرُويشِدِal-Ruwayshid أَوor خَرجائِهِits Kharja' يَدِقُit beats down
It awaited night, until its watcher said:
“On al-Ruwayshid or its Kharja' it beats down.”
حَتّىuntil إِذاwhen المَنظَرُthe vista الغَربيُwestern صارَbecame دَماًblood
مِنfrom حُمرَةِthe redness of الشَمسِthe sun لَمّاwhen إِغتالَهاslew her الأُفُقُthe horizon
Until, when the western vista turned to blood
From the sun’s redness, when the horizon slew her,
أَلقىit cast عَلىupon ذاتِDhat (place of) أَجفارٍAjfar كَلاكِلَهُits heavy breasts
وَشَبَّand kindled نيرانَهُits fires وَإِنجابَand parted يَأَتَلِقُflashing
It cast its heavy breasts upon Dhat Ajfar,
And kindled its fires, and parted, flashing:
نارٌa fire يُعاوِدُregains مِنهاfrom it العودُthe branch جِدَّتَهُits freshness
وَالنارُwhereas fire تَسفَعُscorches عيداناًbranches فَتَحتَرِقُso they burn
A fire through which the branch regains its freshness,
Whereas fire scorches branches, and they burn.
