وَكَواعِبٍand budding-breasted maidens قَدindeed قُلنَthey said يَومَon the day of تَواعُدٍa tryst
قَولَthe words of المُجِدِّone in earnest وَهُنَّwhile they كَالمُزّاحِlike jesters
And budding-breasted maidens said, on a day of tryst,
Words in earnest, though they seemed to jest:
يالَيتَناoh, if only we فيin غَيرِother than أَمرٍa matter فادِحٍgrievous
طَلَعَتappeared عَلَيناbefore us العيسُthe pale riding-camels بِالرَمّاحِbearing al-Rammah
“Would that, with no grievous matter weighing on us,
The pale camels had come to us bearing al-Rammah!”
بَيناwhile كَذاكَthus رَأَيتَنيyou saw me مُتَعَصِّباًturbaned
بِالخَزِّin silk-blend cloth فَوقَatop جُلالَةٍa great she-camel سِرداحِlong-bodied
While things were thus, you saw me turbaned
In silken cloth, atop a great, long-bodied she-camel.
فيهِنَّamong them صَفراءُgolden-hued المَعاصِمِthe wrists طَفلَةٌa tender-skinned maiden
بَيضاءُwhite مِثلُlike غَريضَةِfresh and tender التُفّاحِapples
Among them was a tender maiden, golden at the wrists,
White as a fresh, tender apple.
تُجريshe runs السِواكَthe tooth-stick عَلىover أَغَرَّa gleaming-white mouth مُفَلَّجٍwith spaced teeth
عَذبِsweet المَذاقَةِin taste طَيِّبِpleasant الأَرواحِin breath
She runs her tooth-stick over a gleaming mouth with spaced teeth,
Sweet to the taste, fragrant of breath.
فيهِwith it تَصيدُshe hunts إِذاwhen رَمَتshe shoots عَنwith قُدرَةٍmastery
وَبِطَرفِand with the gaze of فاتِرَةِfaint البَغامِin its call لِياحِa gleaming-white antelope
With it she hunts, when she shoots with mastery,
And with the gaze of a white antelope, soft of call.
فَنَظَرنَthen they looked مِنthrough خَلَلِthe gaps in الحِجالِthe curtained chambers بِأَعيُنٍwith eyes
مَرضىlanguid مُخَالِطوهاpervading them السَقامُsickness صِحاحِsound
Then they looked through gaps in their curtains, with eyes
Languid, pervaded by sickness, yet sound.
وَإِتَشنَّand they took up حينَwhen أَرَدنَthey wished أَنto يرمينَنيthey shoot at me
نَبلاًarrows بِلاwithout ريشٍfeathers وَلاnor بِقِداحِwith shafts
And when they wished to shoot at me, they took up
Arrows without feathers or shafts.
فَلَئِنthen if بَقيتُI live on لِأَلحَقَنَّI shall surely join بِأَبحُرٍwith seas
يَنمينَthat swell لاnot قُطعٍrunning dry وَلاnor أَنزاحِdrained
Then, if I live, I shall surely reach seas
That keep swelling, never running dry or being drained.
ولَآتِيَنَّand I shall surely visit بَنيthe sons of عَليٍّAli إِنَّهُمindeed they
مَنwhoever يَأتِهِمcomes to them يُتَلَقىّis welcomed بِالإِفلاحِwith success
And I shall surely visit the sons of Ali: indeed,
Whoever comes to them is welcomed with success.

A people to whom, whenever praise is brought,
Praise is sold there at a profit.
وَلِأجلِسَنَّand I shall surely sit إِلىbeside الخَليفَةِthe caliph إِنَّهُindeed he
رَحبُspacious الفَناءِof courtyard بِواسِعٍin a broad place بَحباحِample
And I shall surely sit beside the caliph, for he is
Wide of courtyard, in a broad and spacious abode.
فَرَّجتَyou relieved عَنfrom مُضَرMudar العَريضَةِfar-spread هَمَّهاher distress
وَنَطَحتَand you clashed horns عِندَin the face of المَوتِdeath أَيَّwhat a نَطاحِclash of horns
You relieved far-spread Mudar of her distress,
And in the face of death you clashed horns—what a clash!
فَوَجَدتَso you found حينَwhen لَقَيتَyou met أَيمَنَthe most auspicious طائِرٍbird of omen
وَوَلَيتَand you governed حينَwhen وَلَيتَyou took power بِالإِصلاحِby setting things right
So in the encounter you found the most auspicious bird of omen;
And when you took power, you governed by setting things right.
وَعَفَوتَand you refrained عَنfrom كَسرِbreaking الجَناحِthe wing وَلَمand did not يَكُنbe
لَتَطيرَto fly ناهِضَةٌa fledgling بِغَيرِجَناحِwithout a wing
And you refrained from breaking the wing, for never
Could a fledgling fly without a wing.

And a compact-built mount, stout of joint, as though it were
A pillar of ʿAd, its flanks firmly braced.
