Ah, my people, come to the aid of the terror-stricken heart,

and the cord of youthful passion, still joined, not severed,

and the memory of a beloved whose dwelling you cannot reach

throughout life, save when the beloved is seen in sleep.

I say to returning riders whom I saw

at Salim’s well, from Surad and Ashja‘:

Listen: if you arrive unharmed, then convey

the greeting of one struck by two arrows, in pain.

I carried love and the saddle upon a swift she-camel,

powerfully built and headlong, like a massive camel stallion.
