Who suffused your radiant countenance with light,
Who adorned your radiant dawn with dew,
And graced your pearl-like smile with a gap between its teeth,
And singled out your smiling pearls with gaps?

And disguised enchantment in your two eyelids, so they conspired
Conspired is the magic in your eyelids,
To steal away reason with coyness and the deep black of your eyes;
Agreeing to entice modesty with coyness and playfulness.

And doubled the roses in your cheeks when there appeared
Doubled are the roses on your cheeks when
The basil of your musk-scented cheek, with a crimson flush;
The musky fragrance of your cheek shows through the veil.

And gave the rose sweet fragrance from your own scent,
The roses gained sweet aroma from your meadow,
Till it recounted it, citing your fragrant scent as its source?
As if drawing legitimacy from your blossoming branches.
وَكَمand how many لحُسنكَfor your beauty مَعنىًa quality قدindeed خُصِصتَyou were singled out بهwith it
ماranging بينbetween مُنفردٍa single one منهof it ومُزدَوجِand a paired one
And how many a grace of beauty has been bestowed on you alone,
How much beauty you're peculiarly characterized with,
Some standing singly, others coupled in pairs!
Ranging between peerless and doubled.

Not every radiant one whose charms delight
Not every pleasant one, whose beauty pleases,
Possesses the charms of this delightful sight.
Contains the pleasures of this delightful scene.

وفيand in سَنىthe radiance الشَمسthe sun ماthat which يُغنيsuffices عَنin place of السُرُجِlamps
Whoever seeks your beauty looks at no other fair one;
Whoever desired your beauty, saw no other beauty,
And the sun's radiance leaves no need for lamps.
In the brilliance of sun, no need for lanterns.

بدرُthe full moon التَمامfullness وَشَمسُand the sun الأفقthe horizon فيin البَلَجِdaybreak
They would almost have matched you, but for the difference we saw—
The full moon and rising sun were almost your match,
The moon at its full, and the sun on the horizon at daybreak.
In dawn they both rise, if not for some crookedness.
فَلَمso did not يقَعcome منكَof you ذوone possessing حُسنٍbeauty علىupon شَبهٍa likeness

So no beautiful thing was found to resemble you,
None of your handsome features resembled others,
Save the crescent moon, for all its curvature.
Except for the crescent, somewhat crooked as it is.
كَيفَhow النَجاةُsalvation لمنfor one who ولّاكَentrusted you with مهجتَهhis life-blood

How can one escape who has entrusted his life to you,
How can one who fell for you survive,
While the sword of your glance spares no lives?
When your glance is a sword leaving no soul inside?
خذbegin فيin التَجنّيunjust accusations وَدَعand let منwhoever ماتَdied فيكfor you يَقُلsay

أَناI القَتيلُthe slain one بلاwithout إِثمsin ولاand no حَرَجِblame
Continue your unjust accusations, and let whoever dies for you say:
Take heed and leave those who died for you saying:
“I am the slain one, with neither sin nor blame.”
I'm the wronged corpse, no sin or shame in that.
خَلعتُI cast off فيكَfor you عِذاريmy bridle-strap غيرَwithout مُعتذرٍapologizing

I cast off my bridle for you, making no apology;
For you I lost my chastity, unapologetic,
In your cheek-down lies my excuse, its proofs plain.
In your chastity lies my clear excuse.

And how can I sober from my ardent love for you, when
How can I wake sane, when you have intoxicated me
You have given me love to drink, pure and unmixed?
With pure undiluted love?

Lovers went mad with longing for you and grew distraught;
Those in love with you swooned, I swooned too,
And I went mad with love for you, yet with an untroubled heart.
But my heart remains undisturbed for you.

How far apart are the lover who goes about dejected
Far is the lover who left depressed,
And the lover who rejoices in love's tyranny!
From the lover made joyous by love's injustice.

O you who harp on my pursuit of a young gazelle's love,
O you who provokes with your blows in passionate love,
One intent on stealing the wits of love's devotees:
Robbing the minds of other passionate lovers.
إنif لمhas not يَلجentered حسنُهhis beauty فيinto ناطريكَyour two eyes فَليthen I have

If his beauty has not entered your eyes, I have
If your beauty finds no way into my onlooker,
An ear, by your honor, into which no reproach has entered.
Then let there be listening, and blame me for deafness.

His charms grew sweet to my heart when I was smitten with him;
It settled beautifully in my heart when I desired it,
And love is sweeter to me than your odious reproach.
And love to me is sweeter than your bitter aloofness.

His locks give me a night that darkens, then falls still;
I have nights, darkened then lit up,
There, in the night hours, journeying is sweet to the night traveler.
Wherein the journey is pleasant and lamp everlasting.

And from his face I have a dawn that, if it shines for us,
From its mornings a dawn, if it lights upon us,
Dispels the dark with a bright morning breaking from him.
Dispelling darkness with a shining flood.

No wonder his eyes have bewitched my heart:
No wonder, if his glances tempted my heart,
How many an enchantment falls short of that coquettish eye!
Unlike that playful teasing glance.

I was not the first whose heart was set aflame
I wasn't the first whose innermost was set ablaze
By the fire of yearning, with a passion forever aglow.
By the fires of youth and ever-burning fervor.

So his heart burns with the blaze of longing,
So his heart is scorched with burning passion,
And his eyelid is drowned in the depths of seas of tears.
And his eyelids drown in oceans of tears.

I yearn for the wind if it passes over Iḍam,
I sigh for the wind if it passes by a beloved,
Longing for one whose heart is unstirred by longing.
Yearning for one whose heart quivers with yearning.

O how welcome the breeze that blew to us before dawn,
Would that a morning breeze blows to us,
Swaying proudly through the air with perfume and fragrance!
Meandering the air with fragrance and trees.

It told tales of the sanctuary's dwellers and traveled on,
Relating tales of the lovers' abode and wandering,
Stirring every heart that aches with love.
Exciting all hearts with passion's stir.
فَهَلso did دَرَتknow نَسَماتُthe breezes الحيِّthe encampment حينwhen سَرتthey traveled

Then did the breezes of the encampment know, as they traveled,
Did the zephyrs of the neighborhood wander and whisper
What relief they secretly brought to love's captive?
To the passionate lover, giving relief?

It arrived with glad tidings of union, reciting:
It came with good tidings of union, singing:
“Good news is yours, O love-worn one—rejoice!”
The tidings are hardships of love, so rejoice!
