وَولَّيتُ ظَهري الهندَ مُنشرح الصَدرِ
When I boarded the ship, braving the sea,
If I set sail on a ship, braving the seas
and turned my back on India, my heart unburdened,
Turning my back on India, carefree and elated
فَماfor there is no لمليكِfor the king الهِندof India إِنif ضاقَgrew constricted صَدرُهُhis breast

the king of India, though his heart be vexed,
Why should the King of India frown
had no power over me to forbid or command.
When none can command or forbid me
أَلَمdid he not يُصغِincline للأَعداءِto the enemies سَمعاًan ear وقدwhile already غدتthey had begun

Did he not lend his ear to my enemies, while
Didn't he heed his enemies and see
their scorpions crept toward me with their guile?
How their tricks against me slowly unfold

So he strung the bow of injustice against me in anger,
So he strung his bow of injustice against me
and aimed at me the arrow of arrogance and pride.
And shot arrows of arrogance and pride
وَسَدَّand he blocked عليَّagainst me الطُرقَthe roads منfrom كُلِّevery جانِبٍside

He blocked my roads on every side,
He closed the routes around me
and contemplated what strained patience's bounds,
Trying what tolerance could barely bear

Until God willed to fulfill His decree
despite him—my fate resting in His will.
Defying him according to His desire, not the king’s

وَقلَّد بالنَعماءِ من فضله نَحري
He turned his arrow back upon him, toward his throat,
So He deflected the arrow back at him
and, from His bounty, adorned my neck with blessings.
And granted me priceless honor

He set me aboard the ship of deliverance, and it began
He carried me on the ship of salvation
running afloat upon the sea's broad back.
Sailing smoothly through the sea of hardship

Thus I became safe from those terrors,
Thus I became safe from those fears
and my affairs returned from hardship to ease.
And my affairs eased after hardship

How many a spiteful foe had feathered his arrow of guile against me
And how many evil ones had shot arrows
there, only to be left unable to feather or trim a shaft!
Whose shafts now will neither feather nor fly!

God's providence never ceases, so long as His servant trusts
God’s making remains forever faithful
in Him, to save him from where he cannot foresee.
With Him, His servant is saved unknowingly

As if I see my ship spreading its wings
and flew like an eagle soaring from its nest,
And taking off like an eagle from its nest

swooping low over the anchorage on Jeddah's shore.
Yearning as it anchored on Jeddah’s coast
The sight of land renewed my joys.
Renewing my joy at the first sight of land

The breeze of nearness blew from the direction of Mecca,
The sweet breeze from Mecca arrived
and the radiance of the Sacred House and the Hijr appeared.
And the Sacred House and Black Stone appeared

My ride proceeded tirelessly
toward the abode of piety and the resort of righteousness,
To the land of piety and righteousness

Loftier than any towering palace

I circled it seven times and kissed its corner
and approached the Hijr, seeking a sheltering embrace.
To the Black Stone I came, taking shelter

A draught of Zamzam's water went sweetly down for me;
And I had my fill of Zamzam’s cool water
with it, after thirst, I quenched the burning in my breast.
Dispelling the anguish deep within

I fulfilled the duty of pilgrimage, willingly obeying Him who ordained
I hastened to complete the Hajj willfully
pilgrimage to the House for mankind, seeking its reward.
As Allah had prescribed for people, a great reward

I headed to those holy sites, hopeful
for God's forgiveness of sins and their burden.
For Allah’s forgiveness of sins and evil

I came to Mina, my heart having attained its wishes,
I came to Mina with a joyous heart
and no fear of departure at al-Khayf alarmed me.
Heedless of the crowded throngs

I went early to cast my stones at the jamarat; in truth,
I was quick to stone the Jamarat
with them I hurled embers at separation's heart.
Casting at the heart of separation fiery stones

I kissed the threshold where he resides
rose above the heads of the two Simak stars and the Eagle.
Above which heaven and stars do shine

Then he returned as the horizon shone at dawn

His character, if it touched a rock, would make it
His character, if it touched barren rock
more tender than al-Khansa weeping for Sakhr.
Would make it tenderly weep like the bereaved soul of Khnasa

Its water would flow sweetly with no ebb

When fate frowns on the downtrodden
he, in turn, welcomes him with openness and good cheer.
He meets them generously with a cheerful face

How much hardship he warded off, how much captivity he ended!
Relieving so much hardship and freeing many captives

And how many sublime traits the Hashimite Prophet has
which praise and thanks are too narrow to encompass!
Too numerous even for praise and thanks!

through seas in whose deep waters patience ebbs,
Plunging into difficult seas that test all patience

despite the wasting sickness that wore me down—may its cure be sound!—
For the woes that have afflicted me
and no guide brings healing save your mercy.
None can guide me out of them but your mercy
