They wafted to us their delightful fragrance,

giving voice to their answered prayer:

    words like pearls kept

hidden, their strings the lines of the letter.

A gifted mind composed them—that of an imam,

a master whose speech is decisive.

He is peerless in asceticism and worship,

and in excellence he unites all refinements.

He courted religion and asceticism as a child,

and divorced the world in his youth.

And, in contempt, he deemed all that lies upon the dust—

the goods of delusion—to be like dust.

And he followed in his grandfather's and his father's footsteps,

treading the path of guidance and rectitude.

O most exalted of humankind in my praise,

and dearest of companions and loved ones,

I hold for you an affection made firm

by sincerity's hand, its bonds secure.

So test me however you wish, for I

am love's slave to whoever holds me dear.

And be generous in excusing my reply, for I have

met the midmorning sun with the light of dust.

Fingers of glory stirred me to

verse—but alas, how can my reply compare with them?

For my reply is poetry, while your poetry is a mystery

that baffles people of understanding who try to grasp it.

You dictate from the world of the unseen through

inspiration; my poetry comes from the world of causes.

Yet sincerity has required what it has

required of me in lifting this veil.

So favor me with a glance from you in

secret, to shield me from distress and dejection.

And live on in safety, blessed with bliss,

trailing its hem among your loved ones.
