A greeting from a loving admirer, grateful for his bounty, which
Peace from a lover thankful whose longing has adorned
adorned chests and necks with its necklaces.
Our assemblies with necklaces and finery,
عَلىdespite أَنَّthe fact that كُلَّall of الشُكرthe gratitude لَيسَis not بِبالِغٍcapable of reaching
مَدىthe extent of بعضsome of ماwhat أَولىhe bestowed وأَجزلَand gave lavishly منof نَدىbounty
Though all gratitude cannot reach
For no gratitude can fully attain
the measure of even some of the bounty he so lavishly bestowed.
Some portion of what the Bestower freely gave,
وأَنّىand how يُوازيcould match الشُكرَgratitude إِحسانُthe kindness of مُنعمٍa benefactor
يمنُّgrants favors بلاwithout مَنٍّreproach for favors وَيوليand bestows بلاwithout أَذىharm
And how could gratitude match the kindness of a benefactor
And how can gratitude rival the blessings of the Giver
who grants favors without reproach and bestows without harm?
Who grants favor without obligation, authority without oppression?
