ياO هُماماًnoble one لهfor whom المَعاليhigh honors قُصورُpalaces
يا هُماماً له المَعالي قُصورُ
لاdo not تَلُمنيblame me إِنif عنَّarises منّيfrom me قُصورُa shortcoming
لا تَلُمني إِن عنَّ منّي قُصورُ
O noble one, for whom high honors are palaces,
Do not blame me if I fall short.
حكمjudged الدَهرُtime كيفas شاءit pleased بهضميby wronging me
حكم الدَهرُ كيف شاء بهضمي
وَشَبابيwhile my youth وَالعمرُand life غضٌّfresh نَضيرُflourishing
وَشَبابي وَالعمرُ غضٌّ نَضيرُ
Time dealt with me as it pleased, doing me wrong
while I was young and life was fresh and flourishing.
عُمُريmy age لمdid not يكنwas يزيدُexceed علىbeyond اِثنيtwo, beginning of “twenty-two”
عُمُري لم يكن يزيدُ على اِثني
نِending of “two” وَعشرينand twenty وَالشَّبابُand youth غرورُdelusion
نِ وَعشرين وَالشَّبابُ غرورُ
My years had not exceeded two
and twenty, and youth is beguiling.
كاثرَتنيcrowded upon me الخطوبُhardships والجَدُّكابٍand fortune is bowed low
كاثرَتني الخطوبُ والجَدُّكابٍ
وَقَليلٌand a little منof الخطوبhardships كَثيرُis much
وَقَليلٌ من الخطوب كَثيرُ
Hardships crowded upon me, and fortune bowed low;
even a few hardships are many.
حَزَنٌgrief شامِلٌall-encompassing وَشَملٌand affairs شَتيتٌscattered
حَزَنٌ شامِلٌ وَشَملٌ شَتيتٌ
وَهَوىًand love نازِحٌdistant وَقَلبٌand a heart كسيرُbroken
وَهَوىً نازِحٌ وَقَلبٌ كسيرُ
Grief surrounds me, and my affairs are scattered;
love is far away, and my heart is broken.
وَفؤادٌand a heart منof المسرَّةjoy قَفرٌbarren
وَفؤادٌ من المسرَّة قَفرٌ
وَجنانٌand a breast منwith الأَسىsorrow مَعمورُfilled
وَجنانٌ من الأَسى مَعمورُ
My heart is barren of joy,
and my breast is filled with sorrow.
كَمhow long إِلىuntil كَمhow long قطيعةٌestrangement وَصدودٌand rejection
كَم إِلى كَم قطيعةٌ وَصدودٌ
أَقُلوبٌare they hearts نَحياwe live بهاby them أَمor صخورُstones
أَقُلوبٌ نَحيا بها أَم صخورُ
How long, how long will estrangement and rejection last?
Are the hearts by which we live hearts, or stones?
هَكَذاthus يَفدَحُweighs heavily الزَمانُtime وَيَلحوand wears away
هَكَذا يَفدَحُ الزَمانُ وَيَلحو
كلَّevery عودٍbranch وهوthough it is الممرُّtough الجسورُstrong
كلَّ عودٍ وهو الممرُّ الجسورُ
Thus time weighs heavily and wears away
every branch, however tough and strong.
أَينَwhere منّيfrom me ذاكَthat الصَديقُfriend المفدّىcherished
أَينَ منّي ذاكَ الصَديقُ المفدّى
وَالحَياand the rain العَذبُsweet والحُسامand the sword الغَريرُgleaming
وَالحَيا العَذبُ والحُسام الغَريرُ
Where is that cherished friend, now far from me,
the sweet rain and the gleaming sword?
حيثwhen عوديmy branch عَلىagainst الزَمانtime صَليبٌfirm
حيث عودي عَلى الزَمان صَليبٌ
وَبَعيديand my distant thing دانٍnear وورديand my watering place نَميرُsweet
وَبَعيدي دانٍ ووردي نَميرُ
When my branch stood firm against time,
what was distant drew near, and my spring ran sweet.
أَيُّهاO الماجدُnoble one الكَريمُgenerous المُعَلّىexalted
أَيُّها الماجدُ الكَريمُ المُعَلّى
وَالفَتىand the young man القَرمُchampion وَالهمامُand the noble one الكَبيرُgreat
وَالفَتى القَرمُ وَالهمامُ الكَبيرُ
O noble, generous, exalted one,
young champion and great, high-minded man,
هاكَهاtake it نفثةًan outpouring أَباحتكَthat disclosed to you سرّيmy secret
هاكَها نفثةً أَباحتكَ سرّي
نفثهُits breath السِحرmagic قدindeed وَحاهاinspired it الضَميرُthe heart
نفثهُ السِحر قد وَحاها الضَميرُ
Receive this outpouring that has disclosed my secret to you;
the heart inspired it, as though breathed by magic.
واِبقَand live on واِسلمand be safe علىthrough مَمرِّthe passing اللَياليnights
واِبقَ واِسلم على مَمرِّ اللَيالي
ماas long as حَلاis sweet مَورِدٌa spring وَمَرَّتand pass شهورُmonths
ما حَلا مَورِدٌ وَمَرَّت شهورُ
Live on in safety through the passing nights
as long as springs taste sweet and months pass by.
