مِنfrom أَينَwhere ياO ريحَwind الصَباthe east wind هَذاthis الشَذاthe fragrance
إِنif كانَit is منfrom حَيِّthe encampment الحَبيبِthe beloved فحبَّذاthen how delightful!
O east wind, where does this fragrance come from?
Where does this fragrance come from, oh breeze of the morning?
If it comes from the beloved's encampment, how delightful!
If it is from the dwellings of the beloved, how delightful!
باللَهby God هَلdid يمَّمتَyou make for شَرقيَّthe eastern side الحِمىthe sanctuary
ووردتَand you reached مَنهَلَهits watering place المصونprotected عنfrom القَذىdebris
By God, did you make for the eastern side of the sanctuary
By God, have you passed by her eastern abode
and reach its watering place, kept free of debris?
And stopped by her sheltered drinking place, safe from dust?
أَمor هَلdid سحبتَyou trail الذَيلَthe hem بينamong أَراكِهِits arak trees
فأَخذتَso you took منfrom تلكthose الشَمائِلgraces مأخَذاa share
Or did you trail your hem among its arak trees
Or have you drawn out your train between her houses
and take a share of those graces?
And taken from those traits a way?
أَمor هَلdid حَظيتَyou have the good fortune بلثمto kiss مَسحبthe trailing hem بُردِهhis mantle
فكسبتَso you gained منfrom أَنفاسِهhis breaths طيبَthe sweetness الشَذاof fragrance
Or were you fortunate enough to kiss his mantle's trailing hem
Or have you been fortunate to kiss her veiled cheek
and gain from his breath the sweetness of fragrance?
And gained from her breath this fragrant scent?
وَبمُهجَتيand with my lifeblood إِنif كانَhe is يَرضاهaccepting it فِدىًas ransom
رشأa young gazelle علىover كُلِّall القُلوبthe hearts اِستَحوَذاtook possession
And my lifeblood—if he accepts it—would be a ransom
And by my life, if that pleases her, it is my ransom -
for a young gazelle who has taken possession of every heart.
Revive through it all hearts she has conquered.
لَمّاwhen رأَتthey saw منهof him المحيّاthe face عُذَّليmy reproachers
فدّاهthen ransomed him كُلٌّeach one بالنُفوسwith their lives وعوَّذاand invoked protection for him
When my reproachers saw his face,
When her shy eyes saw him
each offered their life as his ransom and invoked protection for him.
All souls ransomed him and consecrated themselves to him.
وَغَداand began يَقولُto say مكلِّفيthe one urging me بسلوِّهto forget him
ماnot كُنتُI was أَحسَبُthinking منthe one whom كُلِفتَyou were enamored بهof him كَذاlike this
And the one urging me to forget him began to say:
And tomorrow he will say to those charged with his night visit:
I never thought the one you were enamored of was like this!
I did not expect to be tasked with this.
لَمّاwhen جلاhe unveiled ياقوتَruby صفحةِthe surface خَدِّهof his cheek
أَبدىhe revealed لناto us منfrom عارضَيهboth sides of his face زُمرُّذاemerald
When he unveiled his cheek's ruby surface,
When the ruby of his cheek appeared
he showed us emerald along both sides of his face.
He showed us from his cheeks a reddish tint.
وَرَمىand he shot at القُلوبَthe hearts فكانَso was سَهمُthe arrow لحاظِهِof his glances
أَمضىkeener منthan السَهمthe arrow المُصيبthat hits its mark وأَنفَذاand more piercing
And he shot at hearts; the arrow of his glances was
And he shot hearts, so the arrow of his glance
keener than an arrow that hits its mark, and more piercing.
Was more piercing than the arrow hitting its mark.
لَيتَwould that الَّذيthe one who أَورىkindled بِقَلبيin my heart حُبَّهlove for him
أَنجاهwould save it منfrom نارِthe fire الصُدودof rejection وأَنقَذاand deliver it
Would that the one who kindled love for him in my heart
Would that he who set my heart on fire with his love
would save it from rejection's fire and deliver it!
Save it from the hell of rejection and deliver it!
وَعلىand despite جَفاهُhis coldness ماhow أَلَذَّsweet غَرامَهُpassion for him
لَوif كُنتُI were أَسلمُsafe فيin هَواهُloving him منfrom الأَذىharm
And despite his coldness, how sweet my passion for him would be,
And despite his aloofness, how sweet is his passion!
if I were safe from harm in loving him!
If only I could surrender to his love free of harm.
ظنَّthought العذولُthe reproacher بأنthat هَدانيguided me نصحُهhis counsel
بعدَafter الضَلالgoing astray وماand did not هدىguide لكنbut هَذىbabbled
The reproacher thought his counsel had guided me
The censurers thought their advice guided me
after my straying; he had not guided me, but merely babbled.
After my misguidance, but it did not guide me, only led me astray.
